re: What’s your favorite R.E.M. song and album?

To me there are two R.E.M.s. The 80s R.E.M. and the 90s R.E.M. To put it in album terms there is everything up through Green and everything after Green. I generally like 80s R.E.M. though there are occasional songs that are fingernails on a chalkboard annoying to my ears like Shiny Happy People and Finest Worksong. 90s R.E.M. sucks bloated sheep's bladder. They got so preoccupied making socially conscious messages that they forgot they are supposed to be a rock and roll band. Think of Jackson Browne's career arc pre and post Lawyers in Love album. I absolutely despise Losing My Religion and Everybody Hurts. Those songs destroyed the band because Stipe became all serious all of the time after they became hit songs.
The two REM’s were the IRS years and the Warner Bros years. And REM had always made left leaning socially conscious music. Always. You would be hard pressed to find one song that isn’t.

Song: Driver 8
Album: this is such a close call, and over the years(my favorite band) I have said there different ones for different reasons. Right now? Reckoning. LRP may be more solid beginning to end. Fables has great high points, but has clunkers. Nothing after LRP interests me at all as an album even though there are great songs mixed in.

While agree with your premise, for me, it's pre-Document and post-Life's Rich Pageant. I had not use for Document then nor now.

Early REM:
Song: So. Central Rain (saw on MTV, first time I'd heard them)
Album: Murmur
Later REM:
Song: Find the River
Album: Automatic For The People (Opens with Drive, contains Everybody Hurts, and fully enhanced by the great closing trilogy of Man on the Moon/Nightswimming/Find the River)

I’ve never understood the hate that Document gets. It’s in my top 2, like I said earlier.

Musically, they've made better albums, but Document holds a lot of sentimental value for me so that's mainly why I listed it as my favorite. I also like most of the songs on it.
Musically, I prefer Out Of Time. I didn't get into REM until the late 80's, so their earlier stuff just doesn't do as much for me. I like their earlier stuff, but for me the Document>Green>Out Of Time>Automatic run of albums is hard to beat. That run was the height of my REM fandom.
