I was sitting in church today while the piano was going thinking there really are a lot of good church hymns out there, what’s yalls favorite?

The man had some issues with prostitutes but he is a great gospel pianist. Swaggart’s kin is the “Killer” Jerry Lee Lewis and Mickey Gilley.

I'm not religious, but I've always liked The Old Rugged Cross. Also kind of hard to beat Amazing Grace.

I like the old stuff - meaning Bach cantatas, Thomas Tallis, Handel. Some Sundays at St. Joseph's Cathedral in BR you'll hear Handel on the organ.
Allegri's "Misere" is another classic.

Elvis doing "Peace in the Valley" is also a fave.

When I was a teenager, I remember the choir singing Sweet Buelah Land, and an old woman in the congregation (probably in her 80's...so sweet and reserved) being completely overcome...sobbing and weeping uncontrollably...it was truly a powerful moment. Every time I hear that song, I recall seeing that, and it brings a tear to my eyes.

Thinking about that last verse, and someone knowing and embracing that they were getting close to the end...still chokes me up.

I'm looking now, just across the river
To where my faith, shall end in sight (Shall end in sight)
There's just a few more days to labor.
Then I will take my heavenly flight.


Not necessarily my favorite church music...but one of my favorite experiences with church music.
