I don't think many would argue against that this was R.E.M. 's last truly great song , but I'd go one step further and declare it their overall best effort.

Thoughts?

FWIW my other contenders, in no particular order:

Begin the Begin
Radio Free Europe
Cuyahoga
The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite

It’s the only one I like. Not a big fan.

Its pretty generic, too poppy, not nearly as interesting or textural as what they did on previous albums.

All your other choices are much more solid options. I’d argue anything off Murmur is better than WTFK. But I like the song. Just nowhere near my top 10 REM songs.

Radio free Europe is great, always loved that one. Really like the live version from letterman too.

Not even in the top ten and certainly not their last great song. Maybe the last great with Bill on the skins, but there are songs on reveal and accelerate that trump it.

Murmur, Reckoning, Pagent and Fables are 4 of the best string of albums out ever. And that was before they hit it huge.

Not even the best song on that album.

Ultimately, it's a matter of opinion. Songs, post-"Monster" I enjoy more:

Electrolite
Animal
All the Way to Reno

REM's Greatest Hits (IMO):

Perfect Circle
Don't Go Back to Rockville
Life and How to Live It
Superman
Exhuming McCarthy
Get Up
Man on the Moon

Plus the other I listed previously.

The song's title refers to an incident in New York City in 1986, when two then-unknown assailants attacked journalist Dan Rather, while repeating "Kenneth, what is the frequency?"

Yeah, it probably is their last truly great song, but your list makes no sense.

Decent list until Get Up. Wow, that's a bad song.

I like that song, dig the lyrics a lot. Never was there a more nineties-centric line than "Richard said withdrawal in disgust is not the same as apathy".

I always thought Carnival of Sorts (Boxcars) was a really cool song
