Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in a Colorado hotel bar. The guys were fresh back from a Russia tour, playing unannounced, and they were stoked to be back home. There was way less than a 100, just a normal bar scene, because it was off season in CO.

John Hartford with complete band, not long before he died, in a jam-packed house concert. It was supposed to be an outdoor festival and he was too ill from treatments to play outdoors (as scheduled). Was ever how many could fit inside a one bedroom house (or peer in through a window).

Vassar Clements in the drive way at a friends house. He stopped by a day/night early to check the place out and stayed with the heads he found.

A buddy (not me) raves about Bob Dylan walking into a TP Crockmiere's (old school bar) in Mobile and asking the guy on stage if could he play. Said the place filled up real fast.

Drive By Truckers, with 7 or 8 other people in the audience, at Rudyards in Houston. It was after Southern Rock Opera, but before they were well known around here.

artic monkeys at the varsity

This was the first one that came to mind for me. They aren’t exactly huge in the US, but I’m pretty sure the Varsity was the smallest venue on that tour and they had just headlined Glastonbury earlier in the year. Great show and great setlist.

Foo Fighters at the HOB in '97 (they weren't that big yet, but were playing much larger venues at the time)
Beck at the HOB
Bush at the Varsity
Poison at the HOB
Snoop Dogg at the HOB after winning the natty '03/'04

I'm sure there are others

Jimmy Buffett in New Orleans Margaritaville, including once in the Storyville Tavern, the little bar in front with maybe 20 people there.

Update - I saw the Charlie Daniels Band at a private company BBQ on a farm on Nashville. Could literally walk up to the stage.

Saxon and Amored Saint at the Texas Club in 1986.
Soundgarden at The Milk Bar, which was very much a dark and dank basement bar in downtown Jax in the 90’s. Capacity about 300. Badmotorfinger tour.
Pearl Jam four months later on the Ten tour at The Edge in Orlando. Capacity probably about 700.
White Zombie at a club called Shades in Orange Park in ‘93. Capacity probably about 300.
Tool at The Edge in Jax circa ‘94. About 700 capacity.
Black Sabbath and Motorhead at The Edge in Jax circa ‘95. Probably my biggest to fit the main criteria.
Smashing Pumpkins at The Florida Theatre in Gainesville on the Siamese Dream tour. Capacity probably 600 or so.

Not as big but also at The Milk Bar in the 90’s: Public Enemy, Ice-T and Body Count with Exodus opening, Kreator.

Another great small venue still going in Jax called Jack Rabbits... Prong, Toadies, Helmet a few times, Exodus twice

Many others but these are the bigger ones I can think of. These are my absolute favorite types of shows.

Foo Fighters at HOB in NOLA

Same. Was a great show. I believe tickets went on sale 24 hours before the show and it was a warmup concert before their tour. Was a last minute show if my memory is correct. At one point Grohl was standing on top of the side bar, opening Budweisers and pouring them into the crowds’ mouths. I’m not a huge Foo Fighters fan, but that was a great show, especially considering the venue.

A great moment for sure....I remember it like it was yesterday. Can't believe it was that long ago.

Plus I just so much prefer the more up close, intimate setting of a club show.
