Not one thing would be altered..not one bit. They influenced no bands of note. Sorry, but just because you are a fan does not elevate their importance. A brilliant but somewhat unimaginative guitarist leading a garage band with a strutting arse as a lead singer. No come at me, bitches!

Say what you will about DLR, but that man influenced most of the frontmen of the 80’s hard rock bands. And Eddie Van Halen is unimaginative?? Sir, have you listened to a little tune called Eruption??

Why do you say that? I’ve always heard good things about Anthony and AVH, and they sound great.

I think we all can agree Van Halen is one of the all time great rock bands

Bad take is bad.

80M record sales suggest otherwise. VH was far and away the biggest rock band on the planet in the early-mid 80's.

That whole L.A. Sunset Strip scene would have never materialized.
That is a stretch.
“Sunset Strip” was a thing well before Van Halen.

Not sure how they tabulate and just the first that popped up in a search. And not to say they weren't popular just that so were the eagle's and bon jovi (if you get what I mean)
IE: 80's rock is what made me set it aside for quite a while

And as much as hair metal was a big part of the 80s... Artists like Michael Jackson and Madonna still dominated..
Eddie Van Halen greatly added to the Michael Jackson phenomenon with his guitar work on "Beat It."

The Eagles are arguably the greatest band of all time but their style of music is totally different from Van Halen so not sure why they are being mentioned. Bon Jovi didn't really become a big deal until the late 80's after DLR left VH.
As far as album sales, I can find several sources that put VH worldwide album sales in the 75-80M range.

As far as shredders go, Malmsteen was already doing his neoclassical stuff in 1978. He claims his interest in Van Halen 1 was more the general approach to rhythm and songcrafting than the solos.
Besides, if the Powerhouse demos really were from 1978 when Yngwie was a teen, he was light years ahead of Eddie (and Randy) in terms of technique anyway.
DLR got his whole shtick from Jim Dandy of Black Oak Arkansas.

No disrespect to Van Halen, but hadn’t Page and Plant already set the template for what you describe through Led Zeppelin, some years earlier?
I figured Roth and Eddie were emulating them to some degree.

I would be pleased. Very pleased.

I believe the Eagles’ catalog has stood the test of time better than the Beatles’.
Some of the Beatles’ stuff sounds terribly dated to my ears.

Randy Rhoads would not have died in a plane crash. Yngwie may not have been such a prick. Al Di Meola could have inspired jazzier rock.

Rainbow, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Kiss, UFO, Scorpions, Aerosmith, AC/DC were all doing something similar at the same time. Van Halen were great but so were all those other contemporary bands.
But I think Van Halen brought women into the heavy metal scene. VH songs weren’t as dark and made way for a female audience and emergence of bands like Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, etc.

We would have been spared David
Lee Roth. So there’s that.
Eddie was a gifted player, but he lacked nuance, emotion and style.

I don’t understand that though. For not having what you mentioned, he was pretty influential and changed the game. Also, Eruption.
