Love the guy, but I'm pretty sure I was in college by then. I remember listeming to him on 8 track

I had quite a few of his albums on 8-track. I loved the original 6-piece Utopia but after they pared it down to 4 and changed style to more of a power pop sound, I sort of lost interest.

Ours was a mixture of late 90s early 00s alternative and classic rock (as varied as that seems).

Ours had one pseudo-hit, but Jimmy Gnecco has put out a lot of really good music.

Fair enough, but he was signed with No Limit by the time I started HS.

Late 80s / early 90s indie rock. I listened to a lot of the smiths and robin hitchcock. My friends listened to a lot of metal / heavy rock, so I did too when I was with them.

Same era. I can remember nights cruising around town in a 84 Monte Carlo going from a Metallica cassette tape, to a Randy Travis one, to an REM one, to a Poison one. 3-4 guys, all with different preferences but happy to listen to the others' selections.

You were in high school after me and still had better taste in music at that age than me

What's funny is that after high school I got into a lot of the older bands that others have mentioned. I was definitely into Jack Johnson and DMB in high school. Forgot about those.

I almost included ZZ Top. The only album of theirs I had was Tres Hombres but I wore it out and they were the first band I ever saw in concert. Doobies...I liked them but was never a big enough fan to buy their records. Ironically I saw them live for the first time last night.

I listened to all kinds of stuff but had you asked my favorite bands when I was 16 I probably would have listed these:

Fugazi
Minor Threat
Misfits
Pixies
Operation Ivy
the Germs
Ramones
Crass
TSOL
Suicidal Tendencies

I still like those bands and still listen to them on occasion but my tastes these days are far more diverse.

Most of my high school favorites I'm not really into any more, which included:

- Nickelback (shudders)
- Finger Eleven
- Alien Ant Farm
- Linkin Park

But toward the end, I started to like some bands that are timeless, like:

- Tool / APC
- Alice in Chains
- Nirvana
- White Stripes

The thing I regret most about high school and middle school is neglecting all the other music that was out there either at the time or before...some of which was due to Clearchannel ramming garbage down our throats and some was just due to having to dig to discover some bands like:

- Modest Mouse
- QOTSA
- Pavement
- At the Drive In
- Built to Spill
- Neutral Milk Hotel
