Jim Croce

Then Ronnie Van Zandt, George Harrison and Janis Joplin.

I also wonder if Elvis would have one last act in him, dying at only 42 as he did.

Dimebag Darrell.

Why a bigger deal was not made out of a guy shot during the middle of the concert baffles me. Yet they still worship Cobain.

And NOW .........Vinnie Paul! Both those guys left too soon.

We needed more Pantera!

Saw today that yesterday was Keith Whitley's birthday. He would have been 64, and was 34 when he died. Such an awesome voice.

Haven’t seen Prince’s name mentioned. I remember watching him with Tom Petty on My guitar gently weeps somewhere

I know he doesn't get much love here, but I've always been a big Jim Morrison fan.

That being said, when he died at 27, I believe his best work was behind him. He looked old and tired and was probably done with the music industry anyway.

I'd have to pick someone who died before we saw their best work. Hank Williams died at 29 and seemed destined for several more decades of hits and influence. It would have been interesting to see how he'd change when Elvis and Chuck took rock&roll mainstream.

Selfishly, even though he'd given us a nearly complete list of great songs, If John Lennon had lived, maybe the Beatles would have played at Live Aid...that would have been something.

Lennon, Garcia, and Zappa are all good answers. Lennon was on a comeback, but he was still letting Yoko sing. Garcia was trending downwards because of his personal demons. And Zappa was sick and hadn't played electric rock 'n' roll for five years when he passed.

I'm going with Mark Sandman of Morphine. He was in his prime and his death came out of nowhere. It was like losing Phil Hartman.
