What are everyone's thoughts on Death Magnetic (Metallica)?

I’m reconnecting with this album currently and it’s great. I don’t remember the response when it came out, but I think it was well-received.

ISO, it is the most “Metallica” album since ...And Justice For All.

The Day that Never Comes
Unforgiven III
Broken, Beat, and Scarred
That Was Just Your Life
My Apocalypse

What’s not to like?

I like it. It's a good album, but if you compare it to Metallica's older stuff, it pales a bit.

I liked Hardwired more top to bottom, but they're both good albums, even if they're not as good as the classics.

It's a good album and a return to form of the "old" Metallica. I saw them on the Death Magnetic tour and they played an amazing show. Really my only gripe with the album is how "loud" it is. It's clipping everywhere and I can't listen to it for an extended amount of time because of that.

Really good album. For me, it’s better than its predecessor and successor.

It's their best work post-black album. But honestly, almost anything would have been great compared to St. Anger.

Hardwired is really good as well.

I need to get Hardwired.

It’s been a while since I’ve been in a Metallica mood.

Has a gratuitously fast Lars on kick drums for one of the songs. That’s really all I need.

Its pretty good. Huge improvement over St Anger but not in the same category as their first five albums. I think Hardwired is better too. I'd put it slightly above the Loads.

People are way too hard on the Black Album.

Liked it on the first hearing, but less each subsequent time. Sounded like they were forcing the issue with trying to sound like their old self. Lyrically it's a dud too. All around, just another soulless unfocused effort.

Hardwired..... is miles better. Finally sounds like Metallica again, without being a retread. Absolutely loved it, much to my surprise.

I like it better than Hardwired and ReLoad. Some very solid songs, riffs, and James’ voice really shines. Kirks shred solos aren’t good but they had been declining for many years - he’s now only effective writing melodic slower bluesy solos.

I thought I was going to like Hardwired more initially, but after a few years, I believe I'm going to give the nod to Death Magnetic. They are both good albums. Really enjoy them, especially in the gym.

I just don't find myself listening to Death Magnetic or Hardwired at all. The songs just don't stick with me, no matter how aggressive they might sound.

At least the last two Anthrax albums are absolutely awesome - there's just no comparison!
