although they didn't really break out until the last couple years of the 80s and sustained success throughout the nineties.
Another one that I would consider more a 90s band.

Like I said I don't know much about REM but didn't they reach mainstream success around 87-88 and then sustained their success throughout the 90s?
If thats right then yes I would consider them a 90s band... If wrong then I apologize and have admitted I don't know much about the band. I've never gotten into them really.

While REM spanned across two and a half decades, their most priased era by both critics and fans is the 1980s "EMI" era. They did reach far more commerical success in the 90s, and some of their 90s output is pretty classic, but I think they are commonly viewed as an 80s band that continued into the 90s. I think their first album was 1982 or 1983.

This is why I thought of them as a 90s band. I don't think I've ever heard any of their 80s stuff.

REM is without question my top 5 of all time. They have a 5 album stretch that no one can touch IMO. Having said that, I don't think they made anything worth listening to after 1987 except for a handful of singles from 8 or so albums. Chronic town was '82, and then they had a release per year through '88.
