Some of my 80s baws, Brad Gillis (Night Ranger) and Phil Collen (Def Leppard)

They can literally play anything and with anybody. They are rarely mentioned in "GOAT" guitarist discussions. Now, to be fair, there were shite tons of guys who could flat out play in those pop/hair metal bands of the 80s so that is why it is easy to get lost in the shuffle.

Another cat that few have heard of is Austin's Eric Johnson (essentially the original #3 of "G3").

He is our generation's version of Roy Buchanan, who is probably the best guitar player that no one ever heard of.

Eric Johnson is such a great guy and a legendary guitar player, but goddamn if his music isn't lame. I think Gary Clark Jr. and John Mayer suffer from a similar affliction.

I'm going to submit Xan McCurdy from Cake. Dude has a great tone, sits perfectly in the band, and plays really interesting off the wall parts. He's kind of like an alternative rock/classic country version of Steve Cropper.

I never appreciated his skills while he was alive...always thought of his music as poppy dance stuff. After his death I started watching some of his live performances on YouTube.

This is absolutely true. Almost all of the eighties guys are unrecognized. Guys like Reb Beach, Vito Bratta, Andy Timmons, Tony MacAlpine, Vernon Reid, Akira Takasaki, Chris DeGarmo, Paul Gilbert, Jason Becker, Marty Friedman, etc., etc.
