already knocks joshua tree out of the top 5

The Joshua Tree is a fine album, and it's U2's best work (well their most commercially successful work anyway). But to call it top 5 album of all time is laughable.

However, a major critique of it, from a relatively objective point of view, is that every song on the album sounds basically the same. Seems like they're all between 100-110 BPM and 1/2 the songs on the album are in D Major.

When would you consider the downhill pretty fast? After Achtung, you have Zooropa an Pop, but even those were No.1 in every country and sold millions. They had a resurgence in the early 2000's that probably out sold their 90's material. I don't even think the Stones managed anything like that. They are very few artists with that kind of run over 40 years. Peak, valley, peak.

Yeah, I think Achtung was ok, but nothing after that did anything for me. Just my opinion obviously, but I think a lot of those sales are due to what they'd previously done.

The Stones are another good comparison. They went about 15 years before they started that slide, imo. After Some Girls, it went downhill pretty quick. They basically play a handful of songs on any album after that live, which is a pretty good tell of the quality of their output post Some Girls.

Fantastic run over their first 10 or so years, then they go downhill pretty fast.

You do realize that U2 has been the biggest band in the world in 3 separate decades, right?

80s - Joshua Tree
90s - Achtung Baby
00's - All That You Can't Leave Behind

Y'all acting like they peaked with Unforgettable Fire

They all have a similar sound, which could be a critique, but is also a reason many make that claim about the album being Top 5. The recording setting and technique giving it that open desert “feel” which is what most cite for the albums universal critical acclaim.

quote:

Throughout the sessions, U2 sought a "cinematic" quality for the record, one that would evoke a sense of location, in particular, the open spaces of the United States.

JT has 3 stand alone songs recognized anywhere on earth. The rest of the album is more about state of mind, which was a conscious decision on the bands and producers part.

There’s much about U2 I don’t like most of which has been mentioned, but Joshua Tree was a unicorn. 3 individual classics and an album that must be taken in as a whole.

Are you suggesting that everyone on this list is "better" than U2, or is this just intended to reflect your personal favorites?

selling a lot of albums/tickets doesn't make them good.

Taylor Swift has sold 114 million albums and sells out every venue she books.

It was a response to a specific question which was:

That's clear in the string and not sure how you could miss it.
