U2 - Why don't they just give up and throw in the towel?

They have more money than God. They have plenty of charitable side projects to keep them busy.

The new music they have been throwing out is hallow, boring, generic crap. Contrary to what some of you all think, they have put out some decent music (Pride, With or Without You, Sunday Bloody Sunday, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, When Love Comes to Town).

The garbage that has been put out they past decade or so is only tainting their legacy.

How could we live in a world without Bono?

They sold out to pop radio after Joshua Tree and haven’t really made a good record since.

I thought Achtung Baby was a good album. After that...

Seriously. Don't mess with my phone's music. It took about 30 minutes to figure out how to get that crap off.

Their best stuff came out from War to Achtung Baby. Although How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb had some good stuff on there. Vertigo, Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own, City of Blinding Lights, and All Because of You were all solid. I don't mind the album Apple put on my phone, but I agree... Their best days are behind them.

How many bands have been both prolific and had the longevity to last 38 years?

Truly, to even be considered as irrelevant, after so many years, even serves to prove that they are at the very least relevant.

What other band besides the Stones can compare?

Bruce.
Dylan.

Anyone else?

Stupid question. U2 is still printing money every time they go on tour.

every song they write sounds the same ... "it's a brand new daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay" ... they should make an entirely acoustic irish album ... or do a cover album ... their schtick got old a long time ago, regardless of how great they were ...

Oh there are a handful in metal alone:
Maiden
Priest
Ozzy
All well over 38 years.

All of the Big Four are rapidly approaching 38 years. Slayer won’t quite get there since they’re hanging it up.

.

So are you saying those bands are continuing to put out music now as good as their early years? I’m skeptical. The way I’m reading the OP is he means U2s later releases are terrible, But few if any do really good stuff consistently beyond 10-15 years. Personally I really like All That You Can’t Leave Behind, but that was 17 years ago now and nothing since has done anything for me.

Someone mentioned Rush, I was HS when Rush was big and there were A LOT of Rush fans (like my cousin) that we’re fans from the 70s that HATED Signals and Grace Under Pressure and everything after. I actually liked Roll the Bones but really nothing after that (even the 2 between Power Windows and RTB didn’t do much for me, beyond a song or 2). I saw them on the R40 tour in 2015 and did listen to Clockwork Angels, it’s good but it just doesn’t compare to the classic Rush of 2112, Hemispheres, Moving Pictures etc

It's not that the new music is terrible, it's that Bono is super douchey and the lyrics suck.

With an assist from B.B. King who makes the song. When he starts belting out "When love comes to town, I'm gonna catch that train....." it's pretty damned good

I always thought "Angel of Harlem" was maybe heir best because it did not sound like them, it was very R&B

Actually I really like Rattle and Hum overall.
