Most bands lose their creativity after 7 or 8 years. One reason I like King crimson. Fripp was always dissolving and then forming new band every few years. Kept th spark going.

But hell, even those three bands/artists are putting out relatively subpar material. It's fricking tough to have that sort of longevity and continue to put out strong albums. Someone mentioned Ozzie...Ozzie has been putting out shite for a good while now.

I think the blues are pretty much the only genre where artists can succeed for 30+ years, mainly because it's the only genre (with the possible exception of country) that truly celebrates old contributors and, in fact, the music is better with an old guy singing.

Rock, punk, hip hop, alternative, indie, etc....they're all far too rebelliously based attitudes to embrace new music from a guy who is 50 or 60 years old.

I get this, but as much as I like the blues, it's a bit simpler genre. I'm not dissing it as there are brilliant blues musicians out there, but IMO you can play this style with slight variations and continue to sound relevant--the basics of the genre don't change much. Rock/Pop/etc. varies wildly.

This is a good point. Folks like Paul Simon and Van Morrison have continued to put out good music into their late 60's, but doubtful a 20-something will get into it.

They still haven't found what they've been looking for.

First two albums were great. An cat dubh, I dig, most don't .

Electrico is a great song. Great.

They had talent.

Bono was a fame seeking douche, like Bowie, like Jagger.

Really.

End of story.

They pretty much died for me after Joshua Tree. Loved that album and the ones that preceded it, but the stuff afterwards never peaked my interest.

I came up with these albums, and the quote above about says it. Since then there have been a few decent songs here and there, but U2 in that particular period is what cemented their legacy today.

The Unforgettable Fire was very unique and much different from anything at the time. I lost interest with them after this album but it's a top ten for me, easily.

U2 - Why don't they just give up and throw in the towel? by TaTa Toothy

Stupid question. U2 is still printing money every time they go on tour.

Exactly! The OP asked a question that has an obvious answer. U2 makes a huge amount of money from albums and tours. That's why they don't throw in the towel. I agree with many in this thread: most of their material after their first 3 albums is not great, but they obviously still reach a large audience that likes what they do. If you don't like something, find something you do like.

I think that Bono probably did not have a problem with it given who it was. B.B.'s voice and delivery was so powerful he would overshadow most singers

When B.B. would come in strong like that, the conversation is......OVER.

Everything they did through Achtung Baby was great. I saw them a couple of times during that period and their shows were amazing. They always delivered live....After that, I quit paying any attention to them. Bono's savior complex has become particularly annoying to me.

As to the OP, anytime U2 goes on tour they still sell the frick out. People love them and still want to see them.....like the Stones, people love it and still want to see them.

Pop was their last great album.

Achtung Baby will always be my favorite album ever.

Have been my favorite band ever - have seen every tour since Popmart multiple times and even I am done with them now - the Trump KKK thing was unforgivable.

Relevant?
Only because of live shows. He hasn’t been musically relevant this century.
