That doesn't necessarily mean more players.
One thing is, pickers all have more than a couple of guitars nowadays. I've bought 3 new guitars in the last eight months myself, but I bet 75% of the new guitars sold, go in the closet and get forgotten by folks who never learn to play them.

That’s a symptom of government money printing not a statement of how music isn’t dead

ETA: music always has been dead

There hasn’t been real musical talent since court jesters. Come up with lyrics on the spot, play the lute and sing, dance, juggle, tell jokes for the king

And if you suck you get executed

Tbh that’s how it should be now

And the 14-18 thing is more being caught up in the zeitgeist

When I was a kid Led Zeppelin shirts were trendy so I had one and liked Led Zeppelin

Now that I’m older I have no time to go out searching for a zeitgeist and no one cares about music in the places I go so I don’t get tricked into appreciating new music that sucks. If we were all 15 we’d think nba youngboy was good but y’all are all like 40 so y’all hate him

Some of us would grow up and realize nba youngboy sucks and never listen to him again. Some of us would never examine our lives and still listen to the music from high school as adults. That music still sucked you just didn’t realize it at the time

See: Led Zeppelin, skynyrd etc

I found good music again after watching a Tubi documentary on Louis Prima.....dude is music and entertainment personified.....Louis Prima's music brings back memories of my deceased father's Big Band era music he so loved. The level of musicianship from the early 30's through the late 50's has never been duplicated let alone matched.

Djs killed a lot of that by taking away like 80% of the live music work

I've been going through this list of records from the 1001 Records to Hear Before You Die that starts from oldest to newest and it has been a great listen. Louis Prima's The Wildest, Frank Sinatra's In The Wee Small Hours (a concept album 12 years before Sgt Pepper), The Louvin Brothers' The Tragic Songs of Life, Buddy Holly's first album etc. It's exposed me to a lot of music that i had either never heard or had only heard bits and pieces of.

Music didn’t suddenly get shitty, there’s always been great music and shite music in every single era
It was not sudden, but it did happen. Yes, there was shite music always. The ratio is worse now than ever.

What’s happening now is a lot of y’all are way past the prime target demo for top 40 music as well as the nostalgia factor.
I was past top 40 music by 18 years of age.

quote:

With that comes underground artists and bands that may have never gotten a chance in older eras
We found them anyway. It was just harder.

the worst of music is now way easier to find then it used to be
Meh, that crap was always easy to find if you had a radio.

You guys should watch Gene Simmons interview with Dan Rather and he pretty much nailed it the reason why R&R is dead. Is on YT, look it up, it's pretty accurate.

Ok, but that doesn’t mean that the most popular music has always been targeted at teens

It was just harder.

Which means less people would find it

The thing is people just seem to be forever stuck in “my generation was better” even with music. Music changes especially what’s popular. The type of music that was popular for Gen X was hated by Boomers just like the Gen Z and Millennial music is hated by the older generations. People can’t accept that their nostalgia is no longer on top so they just say oh well this sucks now. Also music is extremely subjective so what maybe great to this board probably sucks or isn’t all that to others

What do you expect when they can't make real money off sales. Streaming killing it. Just like it's killing movies by destroying dvd sales.

One reason i mow listen to symphonic metal. Still has some creativity and real talent.

Absolute boring, listless, zero talent, crap. Today’s music has never been worse. Horrifically bad.

This artist has not released an album in over a decade

And this is supposed to be improv today. People should have gone to jail for this shite.

This is a recording of old people that was recorded over a decade ago.

The last time you checked in with music was in 2012?

Through Spotify, Soundcloud and Youtube I have access to more music than ever. I expand my library almost everyday.

Most of it is from independent artists. Couldn't tell you what the big labels are pushing and I don't care.

The way music is served today vs. 70's and 80's has an effect, IMO. Big cardboard albums with lyrics were awesome to digest as you ventured into in album...an entire album!

Everything you posted is pure speculation without a single solid tangible fact cited. It’s just such a lazy point of view.

Can we all just fricking agree that the 2019 Purple Mountains and 2020 Hum albums were both fantastic?

No it isn’t, this is literally just another example of the older generations bitching about the younger people. Everyone’s generation’s music was the best ever and anything after that sucks.
