It's 1995 and I'm down at Keesler AFB in Biloxi. Weekend trips to Slidell/NOLA when drinking age was 18, drives through Gulfport listening to Pearl Jam bootlegs($24.95 single disc/ 49.95 double), at the ripe age of 18 and starting to form strong musical opinions. Those of you around in the early-mid90's probably remember how much of a resurgence some classic rock acts had...Jimi, Neil, Janice, etc.

I had this buddy from somewhere in LA. He called himself a coonass, if that means anything. Geeky dude but pretty cool. Dude was a YUGE Kiss fan. I mean, I'd never even listened to Kiss to this point in my life because what I'd heard was straight trash. Not this dude, he loved 'em.

This dude loved them so much that he insisted Kiss' version of the National Anthem was better than Jimi's. To this day, I've never heard such a ridiculous musical opinion. He'd heard the Jimi version...knew the Jimi version...and said Kiss' bullshite was better. I was embarrassed for him.

What's the worst musical opinions y'all have heard?

Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 greatest guitar players of all time. I know lists are subjective but damn.

That anyone else’s opinion matters in terms of what I like.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the concept of a geeky coonass. Powers Boothe and Keith Carradine weren't sloshing around Comiccom in Southern Comfort.

Rap dumbed down and oversaturated the music industry.

And greedy shitheads realised how much easier it is to manipulate 1 person instead of a band.

Artists are bands and investments nowadays. Sure it always was..but since the 1950s there has been much trial and error.

Record companies got smarter, then the MP3 came along. They had a lot of power. But that made them desperate. Now, they wont invest on anything unless you have an established social media following, play by their rules and convince you that..when you have this huge following, you still need them.

Get you in a magazine no one cares for, on a radio station no one listens to.

YouTube has done more for music in the past 10 years than the music industry has.

Youtube is a game changer especially for musical talents that were struggling to be heard. I know an acapella band called pentatonix that was dropped from a label and they have a combined four billion views on YouTube.

Rick Blackburn (Capitol Records) dropping Johnny Cash after him making them ga'zillions and him staying clean and sober.

Supposedly his reply on a subsequent release

Very few recording artists have not been dropped by a record company

To be fair, I dont think any Cardi B fan ever has said they listen to her in order to be blown away by her talent

True.

Still he was generational. Kinda like a company intentionally dropping a Elvis or Hank after they'd peaked but still not out. Yep, not without precedent, yet still preposterous.
