My opinion on these two bands... kill em all changed me. it made me pick up a guitar. it made me practice and it has played more than any other album for me.
but i would still rather listen to youthansia and countdown than puppets.
i pick lightning over rust in peace.
its a toss up between kill em all and sfsgsw, and kimbabig.
cryptic over load.

Metallica!
I really enjoy Megadeth a lot but will always defer to the band that gave the world Kill Em All, Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets and ...And Justice For All.

Also, this was the lineup order for the Big 4 concerts, Megadeth opened for Slayer and Metallica...just sayin...

Metallica all day. Megadeth is a great band but no one in heavy metal can match the run of Kill em All, Lightning, Puppets, and Justice.
Metallica could put out a folk album. It still would not tarnish what they've created in the past for me.
Load wasn't good but Megadeth has released some trash as well. It may have stuck to the Mustaine formula but that doesn't mean it was good.
As far as Metallica "selling out" with Load, I dont even understand how that applies to them. They were already the biggest metal band in history. They've always done what they wanted and any band that does that is going to lose fans. Hell, they lost fans with Kill em All because it was "too slow" for hardcore thrash metal fans.

Both bands put out classics in the 80s, then pure shite in the 90s-early 2000s. Megadeth had a strong comeback with Endgame though. Death Magnetic is alright.

Nothing Megadeth ever did can touch Kill Em All, Ride the Lightning, or Master of Puppets.
Rust In Peace disagrees
ETA: I'm a guitar player so I'm biased. Guitar players tend to like Megadeth more because the riffs and leads are so much better. Marty Friedman is my god. Such a unique player. I will say till I die that RIP is the greatest guitar album ever.
MoP and RIP are neck in neck IMO FWIW

why do we have to choose?
I'd say Metallica...but still like Megadeth.

Even Dave Mustaine knows Metallica is better.

I like me some Megadeth, but I will take Metallica every day of the week.

Metallica if for no other reason than Mustaine's vocals sound like a baby pig being gutted alive whilst someone scratches nails across a chalkboard.
I'm sure Megadeth made some great tunes, but I never could listen to them because Mustaine sucked so bad at singing.

It was always like the Beatles vs Stones of the Metal world.
Obviously the answer to this question is The Beatles.

Not sure about that. I'm sure Dave was / is envious of the fame that Metallica has attained, but I'm not sure he would say that they are technically a better band. Megadeth's music seems much more complex and Dave's guitar skills are much better than Kirk's or James' abilities.

Why does Metallica sell more recordings and more tickets to live shows than Megadeath? Because they have Lars on drums.

Him and James are the faces of that band, no doubt. He is metal celebrity.
That being said, all of Megadeth's drummers were probably better than Lars, especially Nick Menza who is very, very good.
