It was always like the Beatles vs Stones of the Metal world.
I like both. Probably liked Megadeth a little more in my youth.

I would have to go with Megadeth...not to take away from the fact there was some great material by Metallica, but 'Load' and the matching haircuts and Cuban pimp look smelled like sellout to me...in fact, they never recovered from that 'look' or album...

For me Metallica and Slayer are way ahead of Megadeth.

I agree 100% with this. They sold out hard and it shows. That last album they put out just sounded sad and desperate any semblance of the amazing metal soul behind this band was completely gone and we were given some sad pathetic husk of an album.

Doesn't matter. Their first five albums are legendary. Nothing Megadeth ever did can touch Kill Em All, Ride the Lightning, or Master of Puppets.

Peace Sells or Master of Puppets were both 86 releases. Close call maybe lean towards peace sells. But volume, I'll take Metallica just on kill them All, Ride the Lightning, and Garage Days Rerevisited.

Rust in Peace says hello.
Master is probably Metallica's highwater mark. Rust is Megadeth's.

metallica has never been a 100% metal band. go all the way back to kill em all, arguably one of the most influential metal albums of all time. they had slow, acoustic sections even in their heaviest works throughout their career.
kill em all
Phantom Lord
Four Horsemen
ride the lightning
fight fire with fire
fade to black
call of ktulu
master of puppets
battery
master of puppets
orion
my point is. at every album, there was a group of people who said they sold out. they would hear the next slow section in one of their songs and it would be too much. "fricking sellouts!" and then they would say this isnt the band they used to be, and they would be right. look at the bands in the main 4 that started around LA. 2 of the bands progressed rapidly, and 2 stayed stagnant. megadeth and metallica are constantly evolving, but metallica does it faster.
when the black album came out, there was this groundswell movement that they had sold out. all because of a few acoustic or slow songs... see the links i gave already, its nothing new for them. how about the tracks that no one ever talks about?
of wolf and man
holier than thou
through the never
if you take the black album on face value, its extremely weak and the writing is way too simple. they had some gems on it though.
same could be said for load. writing was too simple, but a couple of the songs were really great.
each album has had more duds than the previous one, but each album still has a few songs to remind you that this band is still really great. I dont believe that they ever sold out, i truly believe that every time they went into the studio its a true reflection of who they are. maybe sometimes they arent angry at anything and the album feels forced (black), and other times they are really relaxed and the album echoes that feeling (load) for better or for worse. it might not be what YOU wanted them to do, but what agenda would they have by "selling out?"
if its so obvious that they sold out, then the backlash must be greater than the good. so what is their motive? did you ever think that this is just who they are, and you are the one waiting back in '86 for the next puppets album and they are moving past you?
