I remember going to the school library and checking out the latest rolling stone. I would immediately flip it to the back to see what the "college chart" was, make a photo copy and then head to record store and buy tapes.

When I think of "indie rock" -- or merely "indie" as it was explained by the initial explainer -- I think of the term as it is generally used today. Which is a massive umbrella term that covers any band that you might hear on Sirius XMU.

...or the fact than Nirvana and REM were even included on this list. Nirvana was awful, and REM just became full of themselves (and this coming from an REM fan from the days they played in dives like The Bayou on Chimes Street).
