Artistic influence – REM’s influence cannot be understated. They invented indie rock, and they are the dividing line between punk and post-punk. Who else invented a genre? Public Enemy pretty much invented modern hip hop. Metallica invented thrash metal. Minor Threat invented hardcore. OK, that’s simplistic as there’s always a 100 other bands, but REM is generally credited as being the fathers of “alternative rock”, which is a pretty big section of iTunes.
Also, what are you claiming REM invented? Indie Rock or Alternative Rock?
Because the former isn't a genre and the latter they didn't invent.

Alt rock and indie rock are the same thing. Just we called indie rock alt rock in 1995. Now we call it "indie". And yes, REM are the fathers of it (well, along with others, but REM is a fair demarcation point to when post-punk became alt rock).

REM were definitely early in on the indie rock movement in the 80s...
(I believe there is a difference in indie rock and alt rock, but thats another thread)
I agree they are one of the best American bands of all time, for a lot of the reasons already mentioned.
I always find it amazing that people always have to bring up older bands when talking "best of" (irony is REM is in their 4th decade)

"Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band" should be on this list.

Public Enemy
The Stooges
Beastie Boys
Doors
Allman Brothers
Talking Heads
Velvet Underground
Sonic Youth
Big Star
:eyeroll: on all of these. Most of these are hipster picks (and I like most of them).
And the Doors? I'm sorry but they suck arse.
And I'm a huge Big Star fan (even saw them live), but top 25??? And the Replacements only put out 3 records.

The frick are you talking about?
How is that a hipster pick and do tell your argument against them being on the list.... I'm sure its extremely intelligent

Yes, #1. Honestly, I don’t see who else has a case. (And let me first say that REM isn’t my favorite band, I’m not this dyed-in-the-wool REM fan who has an altar built for Peter Buck). If you took an objective measurement of longevity, commercial success, artistic influence, and critical acclaim – I don’t think there’s another band that scores as highly as REM on all four metrics.....
Yeah, my love for REM has waned in recent years. I don't think they're that great of musicians individually. But I think you can make a case for them based on their place in rock /alternative music. They're like the museum piece that represents the era best. They are THE transition. They definitely had 'something'. I remember hearing them for the first time and being so excited b/c it was so cool and really original.

Fair enough.
I love the Replacements btw.

Who would be better? Big Star and the Mats are in my top ten of american bands...
I think most of them fall into the ground breaking/innovative status... low on commercial success...
I agree on your assessment of the doors however...

Actually, what I like about the list is that it's pretty inclusive. It is well represented by classic rock dinosaurs, super popular bands, super hipster cred, and hip hop. There's something for everyone, and a pretty balanced list without favoring one kind of music or even one era. I don't see anything on your hipster list that isn't justified (and most of those aren't super hipster bands... Talking Heads are pretty objectively popular).
As an indie snob, I could wail about the exclusion of Fugazi or the Minutemen (and all of the SST roster), but cuts had to be made to include the Eagles and Van Halen. Really, I think the biggest omission is Sly and the Family Stone. I'd have them top five (actually, I'd have Fugazi top five as well).
I turn in my hipster cred when I admit I don't like Sonic Youth.

This thread has really got me puzzled. Basically America is terrible at putting out good bands. As I think of my favorite bands through the years, none of them are from the U.S.
Big Star: love em - I covered September Gurls in a band I played in once. I just questioned their longevity (I saw them when the guys from the Posies had joined). I totally agree on influence though. I had my wife listen to them and asked her when she thought the album was recorded. She said early 00s. They were unbelievably influential and WAY ahead of their time

Speak for yourself.
Just about EVERY one of my favorite band/musicians are American or North American at the least.
The Allman Brothers Band
The Grateful Dead
CCR
The Doors
The Band
Are all just as good if not better than absolutely any British band you can throw at them in my opinion. That includes The Beatles and Zeppelin btw....

yeah. that was a pretty ridiculous comment i thought.

So what exactly are the musical characteristics that the term "indie" describes or identifies?
gen·re/'ZHänr?/
Noun:
A category of artistic composition, as in music or literature, characterized by similarities in form, style, or subject matter.
Hip hop is a genre. You say a song is hip hop and I immediately know more about the song than I did before.
Bluegrass is a genre. Same idea as above. You tell me the band is bluegrass, I have an idea of what to expect when I hear them.
I could list more examples. But I think you get the idea.
If you're talking about a band I'm not familiar with, and you tell me it's an indie, that tells me absolutely nothing about the sound of the band. I could hammer this point home by rattling off a kajillion or so "indie" bands that completely different from each other. But I won't do this, so long as you agree that I easily could do this (i'd like to save some electrons today).
It's no different than if I describe a song as a "pop" song. That doesn't tell you anything about the sound.
You wouldn't consider "pop" a genre would you?

I should acknowledge that one point, when this term was called "college rock", it might have been at least somewhat meaningful. And I will concede that REM very well may have been one of the first -- if not the first -- "college rock" group.
But the term "indie" now is not a definition of a music genre. And it hasn't been for some time.

The UK has Queen who is in fact the greatest band of all time.
But to the topic at hand. The omission of The Cars has definitely got me baffled. I can't think of a single album or song of theirs that I don't like and who doesn't like The Cars?
Also, I'm not a big fan but Greenday has been around for twenty years now (I guess they're still around) and I know they got really big pretty quick.

when I think indie rock, I think the 90's...
Pavement, Sebadoh, Superchunk, Archers of Loaf, Versus, Yo La Tendo etc. (I know I'm leaving out a ton). They were primarily guitar/noise bands on indie labels... Definitely more of a sound than just not being signed to a major
Alt Rock is what I considered the post Nirvana boom of bands like stone temple pilot, bush, etc... all those crap bands. When 100.7 (and tons of other stations across the country) changed their formatting to "Alt Rock"
College Rock is that 80's term that kinda pre-dated indie/alt and got that name due to the programming of college radio stations... I probably think of the Blake Babies as the last good college rock band...
