Like most people, my introduction to [insert musical thing] began as a middle/high schooler by just hearing what was played on radio. So for STP, I was familiar with plush/interstate love song/etc and all their megapopular radio hits for a while. But after hearing them 10000000 times over the next 10-15 years I got so frickin sick of STP I never wanted to hear them again.

Then as an adult I started listening to more of their catalog and really enjoyed it. They have some damn great songs that have never sniffed the radio for reaons I can't explain. I wish there was a radio station out there that only played the big 90s bands that everyone is familar with but ONLY played songs that were deeper album tracks. That'd be neat

This (plus the insertion of fricking DJs) is why I gave up on Sirius/XM. They have a massive catalog of music to choose from and, yet, the Lithium channel will play the same 40 songs ad nauseum.

Was playing Big Bang Baby last night. What a fun song! I've learned about 5 STP songs over the last few months. Probably my favorite of the early 90's bands.

That STP show at the State Palace Theater in 2000 on the 4 album tour was incredible. Weiland was just out of jail & sober. He completely owned that stage. When they opened with Crackerman the place went nuts.

Lithium - "90's Alternative and Grunge"

yet they play several Beastie Boys songs from License to Ill.

which is not 90's , not alternative , not grunge

Love STP and still listen all the time. A lot of their songs aren’t hard to play but sound damn good.

Scott is probably my favorite rock star of all time

I like listening to STP but I wouldn't call myself a huge fan but I'll die on the hill that says Weiland is the ultimate frontman for a hard rock band. He carried it all including the demons.

I think it's because STP wasn't a Seattle based group,

Well that and they're not remotely close to whatever "Grunge" is. They're a straight up Rock band, always have been. I never got the Grunge label.

Yeah, grunge was just a label that the mainstream media slapped on those bands. STP just solid hard rock as well as AIC. AIC had some tunes that you would almost classify as metal.

Neither were the Smashing Pumpkins and they were huge.

I know, I just get irrationally aggravated at people calling STP and AiC grunge.

Maybe its a me problem.

I find myself turning up the volume whenever their songs come across the radio or come up on any playlist.

Scott Weiland passing

Days before he died his new band was supposed to play a small bar in Shreveport. Brass Monkey?

I have a friend up there that is a big STP guy and he went, show was supposed to start at 9, tour bus in the parking lot. So 10 rolls around nothing happening and people (there werent many there) start to leave. Buddy is drinking a beer in the parking lot and the bus doors open and two guys get off holding Weiland up. The hold him there for a second and he pukes, they put him back on the bus. Said he could not have weighed more than 70 pounds.

Apparently kicked the junk but took up cocaine in a big way.

I wasn’t into the whole grunge/alternative era. I was still pouting over Nirvana killing the hair band genre. I did like Velvet Revolver’s music, but in the music videos Scott Weiland and his “heroin chic” look and his weird mannerisms creeped me out.

Then around 2011ish they came to Hard Rock Biloxi. I had mostly gone to see old ‘80s acts in concert there, but I was itching to go to a concert. I googled STP to see if I knew any of their music and was like, “Oh, they sing that”…I knew 4 or 5 of their songs so I bought tickets.

They were incredible. The place was as packed as I’ve ever seen it, and the crowd was more into it and singing along more than pretty much any other concert I’ve been to at Hard Rock. The floor was literally bouncing from the crowd. Weiland (especially with the bullhorn) was electric. He instantly became one of my all time favorite front men - on the level of Freddie Mercury and David Lee Roth. It was easily one of my all time favorite concerts despite them not being on my radar previously.

The next day I downloaded an STP “greatest hits” playlist that I still listen to regularly. For me, they’re easily the best band of that era.

…on a semi-related note since people have mentioned Alice in Chains in the thread, apparently I saw them open for Megadeth in ‘91 at, of all places, the St. Bernard Cultural Center. And sadly, I have ZERO recollection of it. :(

…and St. Bernard Cultural Center is surely an oxymoron.

Heckin loved seeing Crackerman live with megaphone. Scott was a true Rockstar. Only Liam Gallagher reached his level from our generation

VH1's storytellers. Must watch if you're a STP fan and want to hear the backstory on some of their tunes.
