Up until last year I thought "Horse With No Name" was by Neil Young. (America is the correct band)

Be Thankful For What You Got - by William DeVaughn
I thought that was Curtis Mayfield for a long time.

For years I thought “I Can Help” by Billy Swan was actually by Ringo Starr. He sounds like Ringo.

Ready for the World "Oh Sheila" was 100% trying to sound like Prince.
Also "Baby Love" by Regina sounds more like Madonna than Madonna does.

When Klaatu came out with their excellent album in 1973 a writer commented on how it sounded exactly like the Beatles would sound if they had done another album in secret. Fans jumped to the conclusion that they were the disguised Beatles and there was quite a backlash when it was discovered they were not. Great album doesn't get the credit it deserves because people are stupid.

"Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress," by the Hollies. For the longest time I swore it was by CCR.

oddly Paul wrote that for Rod, but Peter made a hit with it. I guess you could call it a hit.

Not sure if it counts since it was written by David Bowie, but I thought All the Young Dudes was David Bowie for years.
Mott the Hoople - All the Young Dudes
Jeff Lynne, like a lot of artist, was greatly influenced by the Beatles. An earlier song where that is very clear is from the Eldorado album.
ELO - Mister Kingdom
