How did he make it to 86? That is amazing. RIP.

I saw him live at the Howling Wolf many years ago. Great show. Someone threw a cup on the stage that almost hit him, and he stopped playing. He started ranting about how he'd been to prison and would kill whoever did that.
I met him after the show, just hanging around the bar afterwards. Super nice guy. Wish I could have taken a picture with him, but this was pre-camera phone era.

If That Ain't Country is one of my favorite country songs.

I have had 17 Greatest Hits on repeat since I found out last night.
One thing that differentiates him is the high quality nature of the way his band is recorded. They definitely bring rock elements to the mix as well. The drumming is interesting and not "country boring". His guitar player smokes. And his steel player makes you weep.
I listened to She Used to Love Me a Lot through high quality headphones last night and was taken aback at some of the steel work I had never really noticed before.

A local guy here, was his guitar player for 16 years. Freddy Powers.
He just died 6 weeks ago.

Same name, different guitar player. It's not the same Freddy that played with Merle.

I probably saw him 25 times. Sometimes solo, sometimes as an opener. Good showman, solid voice, great songwriter. But it's tough to defend that X-Rated album. Way, way over the line.

I really wish I could do the thick Scottish brogue needed to tell that joke properly.
