Damn, this one hits hard. I only had the chance to see him live one time - it was in 2004 at the Palace Station Casino in Vegas. He took the stage late, mumbled something about Pantera played like 30 second clips for 10 or 12 songs, threw his guitar down and then stormed off through a side stage door!

RIP, legend.

I was endlessly entertained by his needless inferiority complex when it came to being "country". If you remember Rhapsody - the original music streaming service - this is mention of him they had at the top of the Highwayman page back then (2005ish). I am SO GLAD I copied it and emailed it to myself:

quote:

"Perhaps the greatest supergroup in country music history, the Highwaymen consisted of Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and, the man in black himself, Johnny Cash. They released three albums (and one live album), had a handful of hits, and unofficially disbanded before Jennings died. Unlike many a supergroup, the Highwaymen didn't let each member take his turn in a round-robin style. Instead, they combined their unique approaches to form one visionary sound: cinematic outlaw country. Upon the Highwaymen's debut in 1985, rumors ran rampant that David Allan Coe had asked Jennings if he could join the group, only to have Jennings reply, "No, David Allan Coe. You cannot."

I posted in the 30 greatest living songwriter thread yesterday that he should be on the list. Should I delete that post now?
