I was part of their original fanbase, in HS and college in the '80s. I attended a show in NO, when Stipe danced onstage w/Natalie Merchant (girl I went with: "They must be dating" -- 
)
I've barely listened to them since then. Recent plays of "Rockville" & "Wendell Gee" were perhaps the first in decades,
Around the same time I discovered REM, I began to read and learn about rock history. I remember reading someone write about the Byrds: "Their catalog was very short on love songs," Indeed there is a cool, aloof detachment you get from a lot of the (non Gram) Byrds, that you don't get from the Beatles or Stones.
The problem is, REM makes The Byrds sound like James Brown.
I don't hate REM and I don't avoid them. But they're not a band I "love", like the Beatles or Kinks. They're a band I respect, like Talking Heads or Roxy Music (tho I respect the hell out of the latter),

REM has sort been forgotten about today. You don't here any contemporary artists talking about them as influences and I don't really here them on Spotify or Sirius or whatever. There first three albums were brilliant but I stopped really paying attention after that even though they had massive hits through the 90's

REM is an important band and that’s really the point since musical tastes are subjective.

In college, damn near everybody seemed to own a copy of "Eponymous". REM had never been my thing in high school but I began to develop an appreciation for them around 18-20. And then I got so damn sick of hearing them all the time
"Rockville" is still a great song. I know "Out of Time" and "Monster" tend to get shite on by old school REM fans a lot, but "Me in Honey" and "Crush with Eyeliner" stay in my Spotify playlist.

I will always be grateful to REM for introducing me to this song, which I love in a way I cannot-- er anyway you get the idea...
I believe this band was mostly from Beaumont but at least one member was from Laffy

Agreed, especially with their limited level of musical talent. I’d say it’s a toss up between REM and U2.

Pretty much my favorite band. But for me, they are pre-Document and post-Life's Rich Pageant. I only listen to a handful of songs in the second phase. Reckoning is my #1, the first4 have all been at some point. I like Chronic Town better than all after LRP. Driver 8 is their best song.
The '85/'86 concerts at The Saenger were what really got me onto the College Chart. Musically life changing.

An amazing band. Such a broad discography that they have performed some of my favorite songs as well as some songs I absolutely loathe.

I'm good with most REM albums but Out of Time is cringe awful.

I'll pass on country feedback but Me in Honey and Belong are good. I like the harmonies.
