REM needs a thread

I can’t imagine a more successful musical or artistic career than what they managed to accomplish.
Original music and sound, stayed together (and illustrated what happens when all members are equally talented and creative), and then quit while they were ahead. Reputation and legacy intact and without argument.
Lets listen to some REM. Best band I never got to see play live. Smoke em if you got em.

I have been revisiting their catalogue recently and they all hold up. From murmur to hi- fi is a hell of a run of great music. Even the stuff after Bill retired is mostly good. Imitation of Life ranks in my top ten of songs from them. All from 4 guys from the South.

Me and my buddy I play guitar with have been playing a bunch of REM songs but nothing after Document. Although we messed around with Night Swimming but its a piano song so we gave up on that.

Have any of y'all caught the tributes that Jason Narducy and Michael Shannon (and Friends) have been doing the past few years for their classic early records??

Going to catch them doing Life's Rich Pageant in a couple of weeks at the Riv.. missed them earlier this year at the Metro..

I’m in the minority, and I went through an REM phase for a while, but I don’t think their music has aged very well like some other 80s/90s bands.

It doesn't hold up well.

I would guess that that is safely a minority opinion. Murmur thru Hi Fi is among the greatest run of albums in music history both in sales and critical assessment

I disagree... I have been listening for 40 years and those first four records always sound so good when I play them... It's amazing how unique and fresh they sound to me on every listen still..
I dont actually mind the next few records either..

REM was also (unlike many of their contemporaries) a road hardened band committed to the live show. From 1980 to 2008 they played over 1500 shows from bars to the biggest stages in the world. My biggest musical regret was not going to the show at Tulane in 84. I could have and I didn’t

Murmur through Document still sounds amazing and I happily listen to those albums anytime. After Document they started over producing stuff and the sound suffered although there are still a few good songs on those later albums.

I loved them in high school 30 years ago. I recently revisited some of their albums and have a deeper appreciation for them in my almost middle-age.

This has always struck me as dumb. If you like it you like it. If it was great music at one time it’s still great music. Such a nonsensical and highly subjective statement. I think people roll it out just to sound hip.
