I got in on REM late (the Andy Kauffman movie) and really need to explore their back catalogue. So it looks like I love stuff most of you hate: "The Great Beyond", "Man On The Moon", "Everybody Hurts", etc. And that's ok for an old guy.

Here's one... Michael Stipe grew up in Illinois across from St. Louis (Collinsville, I believe). Anyway I'm not sure how many of you have see this but he was featured on a news story about The Rocky Horror Picture Show in the 1970's. Here's the clip if you haven't seen it.

That's why "Superman" stands out so much from their own compositions. It has that great "If you go a million miles" break where the arrangement goes minimal, and then the "I know the pathway to your heaaaaaarrrrt" bit, which in the Clique's original has more emotion than the entire REM catalog.
TL;DR: They're some cold motherfrickers

I always thought it was mostly boring, overrated dreck for girls and gay gays. The One I Love has legit good guitar and is a great song that deserves to be remembered. Beside Losing My Religion, it's all utterly forgettable to me. I guess I just never got it.
I do give them credit for not deteriorating into personal infighting. That is admirable and is hard to do.

I liked some of their stuff, but I never thought of them as a guitar band. I thought they stepped it up on Monster with What's the Frequency Kenneth and Crush with Eyeliner.
Peter Buck took control on that album.

I never thought they "sold out" per se'. I just thought their time was kind of over and done. Their sound fit well into that period.

Pretty cool video too.
After Hi-Fi the loss of bill berry was really noticeable both in the sound of the songs and the composition. I don’t think it’s arguable that the song quality fell off a cliff afterwards and that’s not really an indictment of the other three guys
