I agree Springsteen is overrated but his lyrics aren’t terrible. Another odd thing about Springsteen, he’s a flaming liberal but his most famous song, Born in the USA, and arguably his best album, Nebraska, are written about the struggles of working class people in early 80’s, ironically towards the end of the disastrous Carter administration

That's what flaming liberals sing about.

And I agree about Born in the USA...no one paid attention to them lyrics...especially the Republicans.

It's a patently anti-American song and because the refrain is "Born in the USA" nobody paid attention.

Another Springsteen Song, "Born to Run" was proposed for the State Song of New Jersey. Someone with sense read the lyrics
"Oh, baby this town rips the bones from your back
It's a death trap, it's a suicide rap
We gotta get out while we're young"

Common sense prevailed and it was voted down.

Portugal, The Man had a song like this. “Feel It Still.” Catchy beat, nice rhymes. But, if you read the lyrics, it’s a fricking disaster.

The Freshman, by The Verve Pipe

My best friend took a week's vacation to forget her
His girl took a week's worth of Valium and slept
And now he's guilt-stricken, sobbin', with his head on the floor
Thinks about her now and how he never really wept, he says

"Can't be held responsible
'Cause she was touchin' her face
I won't be held responsible
She fell in love in the first place"

The Meaning of Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon"

quote:

The album is a cautionary tale in two parts; the first half describes living a life that goes unfulfilled. This part of the album consists of the following tracks: "Speak To Me/Breathe" "On The Run" "Time/Breathe Reprise" "Great Gig In The Sky"

The second half of the album consists of individual songs about different ideas and concepts that are detrimental to society and can lead to madness. These songs are: "Money" "Us and Them" "A Color You Like" "Brain Damage" "Eclipse"

The philosophical ideas in the second half of the album are a sort of madness in their own right. They are also the root causes to the problem mentioned in the first half of the album that focuses on living an unfulfilled life.

The whole album is a caution against modern living, but hey play Money….

Givin’ Up by The Darkness…a cheery song about heroin addiction.

My mamma wants to know
Where I'm spending all my dough
Honey, all she does is nag, nag, nag
But I won't apologise
I'd inject into my eyes
If there was nowhere else to stick my skag
All I want is brown
And I'm going into town
Shooting up as soon as I'm back
My friends have got some good shite
All I want is some of it
Gimme, gimme, gimme that smack
Well I've ruined nearly all of my veins
Sticking that fricking shite into my arms
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Givin' up, givin' up givin' a frick
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Givin' up, givin' up givin' a frick
Getting off my face
There's a dragon I must chase
Honey, I'm the scourge of all mankind
And everyone but me
Is destined just to be
Slaves to the remorseless grind
But I found myself an easy way out
Sticking that fricking shite into my arms
Into my arms
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Givin' up, givin' up givin' a frick
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Givin' up, givin' up givin' a frick
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Givin' up, givin' up givin' a frick
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Givin' up, givin' up givin' a frick
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Givin' up, givin' up givin' a frick
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Givin' up, givin' up givin' a frick

Warren Zevon, who sang "Werewolves of London"

"Excitable Boy"

Well, he went down to dinner in his Sunday best
Excitable boy, they all said
And he rubbed the pot roast all over his chest
Excitable boy, they all said
He took in the four a.m. show at the Clark
Excitable boy, they all said
And he bit the usherette's leg in the dark
Excitable boy, they all said
Well, he's just an excitable boy
He took little Suzie to the Junior Prom
Excitable boy, they all said
And he raped her and killed her, then he took her home
Excitable boy, they all said
Well, he's just an excitable boy
After ten long years they let him out of the home
Excitable boy, they all said
And he dug up her grave and built a cage with her bones
Excitable boy, they all said
Well, he's just an excitable boy

Born in the USA is a screed against the folly of the war in Vietnam. I see it as an anti-nationalism/tribalism song.

“Train in Vain” by The Clash

a female coworkwer at WEGL, the AU campus radio station, walked in while I was playing it during my shift one day and said “ooh, I love that song, it’s always sounds so happy!”

My personal one is You’re All I Need - Motley Crue.
Great sounding song until you drill down on the lyrics, and then, not only terribly dark but things that have happened to many people unfortunately.

Snowing on Raton (Townes Van Zandt) - the Pat Green/Natalie Maines version sounds great. And it's very upbeat and they obviously have no idea what the lyrics are actually about. Townes had a great way of writing lyrics that were the opposite of what they seemed on the surface.

"Every Breath You Take" - The Police. It's one of the more famous ones. It's about a stalker obsessed with a girl. Drives me nuts when people use it for weddings or romantic scenes in movies.

Tons of Steely Dan songs with that sophisticated sheen of jazz/funk/light rock. Becker & Fagan were pretty cynical boys. "Deacon Blues" for example:

They got a name for the winners in the world
I want a name when I lose
They call Alabama the Crimson Tide
Call me Deacon Blues

Do It Again - about a gambling addict
Babylon Sisters - about the folly of an older man chasing young women who are just enjoying a free ride.
Josie, with one of my all time favorite lines:

She prays like a Roman
With her eyes on fire

... or many others.
