When Queen's popularity started slipping in the US (mostly because of the Hot Space album), they elevated themselves to a stadium act nearly everywhere else, so maybe they DO belong in the conversation with the elites. Shame they just gave up on the US, because they probably could've continued touring here as an arena act, album sales notwithstanding.

Yep I get it, plenty of people still listen to classic rock. And that's ok if it floats your boat. However I'd not come to any music forum acting as if I had something to offer... if it was only old worn out music from my (when once was thin) past glory days.

And your right ghey does seem a great motivator at the moment, but again if that's the impetuous for posting (NOT THAT YOU FIT EITHER CATEGORY) it'd be better off in a political forum, because that doesn't make it automatically sound any better. . . #notfatyet(btw)

I don't know what you expect to accomplish with your ad hominem attack, but leaving that aside for the moment... If you think Queen's appeal is limited to the "classic rock" generation, you're mistaken. I wish you were right (I don't like Queen), but you're wrong.

Maybe they don't get played on ski trips, but then, who does these days?

Beatles

Stones

Zep/PF/Queen
Who

But with the recent movie, Queen could make a case for 3rd in popularity.

Are you serious? They've had a stunning revival in popularity. From theri career as glam metal/thudding Bowie they've been repositioned into one of the legends of the rock era. Look at any thread about "Greatest Frontman" and Mercury will mentioned early and often.

I've seen a number of polls about GOAT "classic rock " where they place high and sometimes even win. I believe I recently read they are streamed on Spotify more than any other rock band. Certainly they're up there.

I am convinced at least part of this is due to the puffing of Mercury as a ghey martyr, though of course that will be argued.

I agree with all of that. I've always lumped Queen in with Journey, REO Speedwagon, Boston, Foreigner, Styx and now many consider them classic rock gods. Blows my mind.

90% rap/hip-hop
10% random like Genesis, Fleetwood Mac, Ozzy Osbourne, etc.

So, only 10% of what you like is even music, and some of that isn't as good as Queen.

Queen is very over produced. It is not for everybody.

What a load of garbage. Do you know why we come to this forum in defense of acts like Queen? Because of the musicianship for one. How many groups today would have had the ability to create complex harmonies like Queen did. Before auto tune, before Pro Tools?

How many acts today have a guitarist like Brian May? Someone who not only wrote amazing rock hooks but also had the talent to play the soft complimenting notes behind a vocal force like Mercury.

Honestly, I listen to a lot of new music but by the time the late 90's rolled around I quit hearing bands who possessed the musicians that we had in the 70's. Sure, there are still wonderfully talented rock bands out there, but the fact of the matter is music will never see another period of time where so much great music was produced by truly talented musicians and writers.

Very true.

Roger Taylor was also a dynamite drummer....

That said, I never got into this band.

They're good, but I wouldn't go that far.

Here’s their setlist from when I saw them in New Orleans in 1978:

We Will Rock You
Let Me Entertain You
Somebody to Love
If You Can't Beat Them
Death on Two Legs
Killer Queen
Bicycle Race
I'm in Love With My Car
Get Down, Make Love
You're My Best Friend
Now I'm Here
Spread Your Wings
Dreamer's Ball
Love of My Life
'39
It's Late
Brighton Rock
Fat Bottomed Girls
Keep Yourself Alive
Bohemian Rhapsody
Tie Your Mother Down

Encore:
Sheer Heart Attack
We Will Rock You
We Are the Champions
God Save the Queen

Keep in mind this was still EARLY in their career - some of their biggest hits came after this - and still I can’t think of a band that can match that setlist. They are the greatest (and most diverse) band ever. Period.
