Now, if you were to have said that you didn't like Queens music, I could accept that.

To say they were a terrible band is simply foolish.

Well, we've covered every opinion possible in this thread if nothing else

It’s no spurious claim. They have several hits that are iconic - songs that will continue to maintain popularity that transcends generations, and that are among the most recognizable songs of all time. Of note: We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Another One Bites the Dust. And these are vastly different types of songs. No other band comes to mind that can match this.

How many acts today have a guitarist like Brian May?
Very true.

Roger Taylor was also a dynamite drummer....

That said, I never got into this band.

And I can appreciate that. What drives me nuts is people who can't seem to determine the difference between good/great musicians and Pro Tool BS.

They don't just have many hits, they're one of only a handful of bands who could release a legit greatest hits album from front to back, unlike many acts whose "greatest hits" albums are a handful of charted singles + a bunch of filler.

Keep in mind this was still EARLY in their career - some of their biggest hits came after this

Naw, I think you summed them up. Have no idea what big selling and more know song could have come after We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions.

All four were great musicians, that cannot be disputed.

Deacon and Taylor were an outstanding rhythm section
Deacon has some of the most iconic bass lines in rock history

May was a hook master and I put him with Gilmour at the best at playing melodic parts on lead guitar, plus may could rip when he wanted to

Mercury was a passable piano player but when he stood up he could command a crowd like no one besides Jagger

I agree they were way over produced, the movie should have shown more conflicts that take after take in the studio brings on a band

That being said their live shows delivered and are legendary

This is a dumb thread

Their greatest work is the Flash Gordon soundtrack.

What? i feel like yall are trying to combat the OP with an equal opposing amount of retard

What are all these universally loved jams of theirs you guys keep alluding to. because i feel like 99% of the population would recognize 3 maybe 4 queen songs. Convince me im wrong

In the goat hierarchy they probably sit somewhere between Aerosmith and Boston. yet you guys keep implying theyre alongside Zeppelin and the Stones

We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions is played during almost every kind of sport, worldwide, particularly in international tournaments and playoffs.

Every single person who listens to "popular" music over the past 40 years knows Bohemian Rhapsody.

Their collaboration with Bowie (still a Queen song) "Under Pressure" has been used in dozens of films and television episodes.

Fat Bottomed Girls/Bicycle Race remains hugely popular, ~40 years later.

The films Flash Gordon and Highlander remain popular (both essentially cult classics) in large part because of entirely Queen soundtracks.

Killer Queen, Tie Your Mother Down, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, You're My Best Friend, Another One Bites The Dust, Somebody To Love - all remain popular classic rock ditties and we haven't even scratched the surface.

They're clearly in that league -

Not at all. not intentionally anyway

I dont think thats small praise. Those are two bands with mammoth album sales, from the same era, with a shitload of instantly recognizable classics. Neither band is everyones cup of tea style wise, but have an undeniable catalog

That's exactly how I remember them and still place them. But to say their up there with the Stones, Floyd, The Who, Zep, really? I wouldn't place them up there with AC/DC. They were just a catchy rock pop group.

Another One Bites the Dust was a successful little skating rink tune. It propelled that album to No. 1. We will rock you/Champions at stadiums is the 70's version of today's Seven Nation Army. I'm pretty sure Under Pressure has more airtime now after Vanilla Ice than it received at the time of release. Same with Bohemian Rhapsody. It probably charted higher after Wayne's World than it's initial release.

Maybe my view is distorted.

I did not know that. Found this:

quote:

"Well, that Queen record came about because that bass player spent some time hanging out with us at our studio. But that's OK. What isn't OK is that the press started saying that we had ripped them off! Can you believe that? 'Good Times' came out more than a year before, but it was inconceivable to these people that black musicians could possibly be innovative like that. It was just these dumb disco guys ripping off this rock 'n' roll song."
