I'm in the market for an electric guitar. Been playing for over 35 years.. mainly acoustic, but the last 5 years I really like my Ibanez Artcore AS93, but have been convincing myself that I should really consider a PRS guitar.

I've been eyeing Reverb for a used PRS, with a budget up to $3000; but I haven't found much (w/in a 100 mi radius). Lots of new CE's, but those 500 series have my attention.

I play a lot of Jerry G stuff, lots of loop pedal work, Allmans, Funkadelic, and I'd love to play a little slide as well.

Any PRS owners here? Any advice appreciated.

You can get a truly excellent PRS for around $1200. They’re great guitars.

OK, here's a real dumb question. Why is there such a huge price discrepancy between the entry-level SE series to higher-end McCarty or PRS Studio? Is it really that much better hardware; or more esthetics?

The cores are way more expensive. Is it worth it? That's up to you. Made in USA, full body carve, better electronics, pickups option for 10 tops. They are very good guitars. I have 2 PRS guitars right now. I have a SE Custom 24. It's a good guitar.

I have an S2 PRS McCarty 594 that is my favorite guitar I own. It is made in the USA but a step down from the core guitars. Probably the best electric guitar I've ever owned. I replaced the pickups with a Bare Knuckle Abraxas set.

The CE's are American made but have a bolt on neck. I've never played one, but I'm interested in getting one in the future.

For what it's worth, Indonesian PRS SE and Indonesian D'Angelico Premier Series are both made under current contract by the PT Cort/Cor-tek factory in Surabaya. Same wood and electronics pools, hardware forged and cast by the same foundries and platers, same CNC technology and the same training/skillset for each line's workers. Neither is necessarily better or worse, they really only differ in blueprints, cosmetics, brand names and any special specs those brands included in their specific contracts.

Surabaya also makes Ibanez, Schecter, LTD, G&L Tribute, Squier, pretty much everything you see that is made in Indonesia. Needless to say, it is a GIANT guitar factory. Actually a series of smaller factories in one giant business park.

You'd be hard pressed to find a better value that guitars coming off those production lines. Incredible bang for the buck at every price point in which they compete.

I have played one of those a lot at the local guitar shop, I love it. Tone and tremolo are perfect. I just have too much other stuff to pull the trigger on it right now.

PRS Guitars

The way Gibson used to make guitars (a friend that plays professionally in a band everyone has heard of told me that)

I have a Custom 24 10 top I got about a decade ago. Love that guitar. Sounds like an acoustic when I play it without an amp.

Got mine from Wilcutt Guitars (willcuttguitars.com).

I was looking for one on Ebay at the time. I put in a question and they contacted me directly. I knew what I wanted but didn't have the budget at the time to get it. They worked with me for a few days and we settled on this one. I was thrilled. Got it for about 1500 less than advertised and they shipped it free.

Mine is the only one I've ever seen in person with the wood grain going long ways with the body.

The 2 best-playing guitars I've ever laid hands on were Core Custom 24s that belonged to a friend.

Expensive, but you're getting something for that money

That’s so nice it should feel bad for other guitars. You should feel bad for other owners.

Yup. I have a PRS McCarty 594SC. Absolutely badass guitar. Has a nice chunky neck which I like and plays like a dream.

Well, if you're looking for Jerry Garcia tone, you should get a single coil strat.

As for ABB, you want humbuckers.

Jimmy Herring of Widespread Panic plays a PRS David Grissom Trim, which just came out with an amazing SE edition for only $900.

Maybe get the DGT SE that has coil tapping.

My vote goes to the SE Custom 24-08. Adds coil splitting to the already great value SE custom 24. That guitar will go anywhere you could ever want tone wise.

None of this is absolute

So this comment confuses me. If it was the best guitar you've ever owned, why did you need to change the pups? The PRS pups weren't good enough? That's a knock on PRS.

I see people rate guitars online and give them 5 stars, but they've put aftermarket parts on. So was it really 5 stars?

I'm eyeing a few PRS Semi Hollow Customs on reverb.

I'm one of those who has to study something for months before I purchase... at least for something this expensive.
