As for the Beatles arguement, I think that some of the Beatles music is pretty great, but some of it is downright terrible.
I like the people that claim that the Beatles are THE OMG BEST BAND EVAR AND NO ONE ELSE CAN BE MENTIONED people. They are kind of sad. You can't look past some of their popularity to the teenage to early twenty girls of the time.
Again, I do like some of their music.

They weren't the best technical musicians by any stretch. And the greatest band of all time debate is nothing but opinionated crap, but I don't think there's any argument about them being one of the most influential band for not only what they did to music and recording industry, but pop culture in general.
If you can sell 1 billion records and have a compilation album of a small fraction of your songs outsell every other album 30 years after your breakup, odds are you were pretty good.
