Lars is to Metallica as Tom Morello is to RATM....

Have to disagree with that. Morello is a condescending socialist twat worthy of helicopter defenestration. Lars is just an egotistical narcissist. Metallica is also way better than RATM's cat scratching guitar nonsense and Zach's commie Def poetry kindergarten rhymes.

St. Anger has plenty of good to offer.

Jim Florentine says the same. Still haven't given it a good relisten...Still haven't listened to Lulu.

Make no mistake - the production annoys the shite out of me. But there are 5-6 legit good/great tunes that are good in concert also.

Agree with that. I've always really liked The Unnamed Feeling and All Within My Hands is a solid song that sounds great acoustically

What the frick is it about ‘Lulu’ that it got that kind of reaction?

For one, it is fricking horrible. I'd start there, Lars.

I rewatched Some Kind of Monster the other night, well part of it it's hard to get through, but one of my favorite moments is when they're in the studio and Lars is being a douche about James' "stock riff". Finally James leans forward and yells at him about it, and little Lars just shriveled like a bitch. Lars always gets credit for guiding the band into a global juggernaut, but for me Metallica has always been James

James is the heart and soul of the band. But Lars has shaped many songs for the better. I'm sure he's fine to talk to in person. He's one of those guys that doesn't come across well in interviews.

That said, I just tried to listen to this for a few minutes and it is just awful. Lou Reed is just terrible.

They have one other real stinker - it was just a single with Swizz Beatz called "We Did It". Terrible.

Was that the one from a movie soundtrack that sampled for whom the bell tolls or something like that?

Nah. Lars and James are still tight. You should read that New Yorker article from December to see what James says. Their relationship runs deep - certainly beyond whatever clickbait this thread is about.

quote:

“We instantly bonded over the fact that we were loners and outsiders, and open to a best-friend relationship. Neither of us had really found who we were yet.” Though their approaches to songwriting were different—“He looks at music as a math equation, I look at it as a flowing river,” Hetfield said—they complemented each other. “Both of us were dreamers. At our best, our relationship was completely free of competitive energy or one-up-ness,” Ulrich said. “But then when there were other people in the room it became ‘Who is leading?’ ”

quote:

Offstage, the members of Metallica provoked one another, particularly Ulrich and Hetfield. Their complex, brotherly dynamic—Hetfield was possessive; Ulrich was demanding—sometimes threatened to overwhelm the band. “We would get drunk, and just start in,” Hammett said. “I remember once James got up and pushed Lars, and Lars literally flew across the room. We would see each other and start wrestling. We could be in a room of twenty people and we’d fixate on each other. No one else mattered.”

quote:

“When my family disintegrated, early on in life, I found it in music, I found it in the band. I remember Lars being the first one to buy a house and have friends over, and I was, like, ‘Who are these people? You didn’t invite me! You’re cheating on me with another family!’

I really salute James for being transparent and owning this stuff.

Also this:

quote:

“I believe the addiction to fame is a real thing,” Hetfield said. “I’ve got my little recovery posse on the road to help me out. We’ll say a prayer before going onstage: ‘James, you’re a human being. You’re going to die. You’re here doing service. You’re doing the best you can.’ That is helpful for me.”

He strangely licks his lips while playing more than Drew Brees licked his damn fingers while playing.
