I feel exactly the same OP. Didnt like them then as a teen. Now, I guess they remind me of being a teen so I like some of the songs now. Third Eye Blind is another band like that.

Matchbox 20 was better than Goo Go
dolls. Goo Goo had that annoying over emotional whiney bitch of a lead singer Johnny Bitchfacenik. He was dreadful
Both bands pale in comparison to 3rd Eye Blind

20 years later, how do you rate these bands? When they were current, they both seemed terrible but time has been kind to their music if you ask me. When their old songs come on the radio now, I find myself jamming to them. Don’t know if that’s because their music was actually good or because everything else now is so bad.
Decent radio hits at the time, I even had a couple of the MB20 albums. Never really liked the Goo Goo Dolls. I hear some of each on a 90s station on Spotify and most are fine. Nothing I would seek out, and definitely not a concert I would go to for either band, but I rarely skip one of the songs when it comes up. Fine for background noise.

Goo Goo Dolls is my most hated band of all time

I enjoy both but prefer Matchbox 20. I'll sit in the backyard with my kids and a cold one. Pop on a matchbox 20 station and enjoy life. Give it a shot.

Music for basic bitches of that time that grew up to name their kids Rayleigh, tayleigh or bayleigh.

There will always always be a special place in my soul for rock and alternative music from the 1990s. I even like some of the Rap/Hip-Hop from the 1990s!

Never really cared for goo goo dolls. But I always liked this song by matchbox 20 and in the video he explains meaning of 3am.

Both are more sentimental to me as associated with memories from my youth and HS. I'm not gonna lie I still crack a good smile when I hear Rob Thomas and Santana Smooth. Probably my favorite Matchbox 20 song was Last Beautiful Girl. Goo Goo Dolls I tend to associate their music more with movies.

I don’t mind them. Seen both live and Goo Goo Dolls were better live
I would strongly disagree
MB20 is one of the best live acts I've seen for a band that got a ton of top 40 play.

I saw Goo Goo Dolls with No Doubt and Bush at the Cajundome in 1996.
They were the weak link by far. No Doubt had just released "Just A Girl" and were the openers and I felt stole the show. Bush was solid and had a lot of hits even at that point. Goo Goo Dolls was very boring to my 16 year old ears and eyes.

I share this sentiment.
as a teen, I didn't listen to these bands when they were popular, but I started appreciating them a few years later (early 2000s or so).
this type of soft/alt rock of the mid to late 90s aged much better than the limp bizkit nu metal stuff.

MB20 caught lightning in a bottle on debut release, Matt Sereletic put the pieces in place and they held it together long enough for that album to take note. Then that Santana track with Rob Thomas pretty much capped their career. Good record to listen to for nostalgia for me, reminds me of college.
Goo Goo Dolls was all about John Reznik, who when sober, was a more talented songwriter and artist. They were just a east coast club band who stayed together long enough to find their place. They had 4 releases before A Boy Named Goo hit mainstream.
