Do you guys think that the original 73-77 Skynyrd gets the credit they deserve? The quality of their work over a 5 year period is phenomenal. There are very few bands that can match the quantity, quality and success they had in such a short period. Yet it seems like they are only mentioned when some one discusses southern rock etc.

Was listening to Call me the breeze on the way to work this morning and just forgot how damn good they were.

My dad always said they were the best live band he ever saw.

And he saw a LOT of the classic rock bands from that era - Stones, Beatles, Zeppelin, Doors, CCR, Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead, etc.

Watching docs on them over the years it was mentioned many times that RVZ was phanatical about having every note perfect. I think it shows in their live performances. The show they did in England when they opened for the stones is unreal. They hit every note and maintained a high level of energy without feeling over rehearsed.

Almost the "band" version of Hendrix - really good and tons of hits, including album cuts that became classic rock staples after the plane crash.

The clichés around the band, the mystique, "Freebird", the whole Southern Rock mythos sometimes overshadow how good of a rock and roll outfit they really were.

I don't think anyone could touch them in their day. Only the ABB could come close for that sort of thing. And that's nothing bad about the ABB, that's something good about Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Might be unpopular. but I like the stuff they've done with Johnny. Wish they would've done like Thin Lizzy and renamed the band. Black Star Riders is basically the modern day Thin Lizzy.

Their run from Pronounced to Street Survivors is pretty epic for any band in that short amount of time. They were a band I attempted to intentionally not like and they kept pulling me back in. I have no use for them post crash but man they were so good those few years.

They were the greatest country/Rock act to ever come out of the U.S.

In the late 70s when I was a teen it was cool to look down and dismiss them as a “ redneck “ band. Typical kind of cultural smugness that has always been there toward working class art. That persists. To admit you respect their catalogue and think they were a significant and influential band with tremendous musicianship is considered déclassé among the critic class. But when LS was in the pocket, they were uniquely BADASS.

My coming of age band.

I was a junior in high school when "Pronounced" was released. Everyone I knew owned it. I bought "Second Helping" and "Nuthin' Fancy" the days they were released. "Gimme Back My Bullets" is a very underrated album, imo.

Me and my buddies were not fans of the Steve Gaines(RIP) addition to the band for "Street Survivers". I didn't like the Strat sound he brought at the time. A helluva player though and we were wrong. I own a flame cover copy of SS.

I saw them four times before the crash. Once with Bob Burns. Twice with Ed King. Once when Rossington and Collins were the only guitarists. Once after Gaines joined.

Never saw them after Ronnie died. The band died when Ronnie died.

Love Lynyrd Skynyrd. To see a good example of how much things have changed there is a concert by them on YouTube in Oakland CA where they have a giant rebel flag behind them and the crowd is rocking their asses off. You won't see that nowadays, especially not there.

This. Radio stations made them overrated because they played Sweet Home Alabama and Gimme Three Steps and said frick the rest.

But after watching the showtime doc on them the other day, I’ve been on a Skynyrd and Allman Brothers kick for a couple weeks. Some of the songs that are hits but don’t get played as much are just so good.

They do not. Unfortunately they get labeled as some redneck rock that’s only popular with old southern white men wrapped in rebel flags.

Truth is that run is phenomenal rock and roll and Ronnie Van Zant is one of the GOAT frontmen

Always thought they were a good band. Never thought of them
As a great band. I saw them very early on in Natchitoches on the campus of Northwestern StTe at an outdoor concert. I’m not even sure their first album was in circulation

right. instead of "overrated", i probably should have said "over played" or "over exposed".

Yes. Twice in the last several months that I've seen the same dumb question asked here.
