Me and my buddies were not fans of the Steve Gaines(RIP) addition to the band for "Street Survivers". I didn't like the Strat sound he brought at the time. A helluva player though and we were wrong. I own a flame cover copy of SS.
I think if the LS doesn’t have that plane crash the band hits utter stratospheric heights with the Gaines, Rossington and Collins lineup. The LS sound was really expanding with the addition of Gaines, his guitar work, his writing and Gaines was a fricking kickass singer too. I know you mentioned you didn’t like Gaines Strat tone but 99 out 100 Strat players would kill to have his Strat sound, interestingly enough a lot of Gaines guitar work was on his black Les Paul Custom. Gaines use of a flat pick and fingers sometimes coaxed a Strat like sound out of the Gibson and he played that Gibson quite a bit.

Freebird is one of the best composed songs of all time. And they’d rock that song 15 minutes plus at their concerts. How it only reached #18 chart wise at the time is pitiful.
LS had a lot of upside left, as they had talent and they were grinders. Just hard rocking country boys.
Would have loved to have see them in concert in the 70s. Esp Van Zant, dude was like a rock on the front stage

Alan Collins never got the credit he deserved. He was the guts of the group in my opinion.

No doubt. IMO Street Survivors was their strongest album since Pronounced and was going to take them to another level or phase.
I always wondered if they would have transitioned into or crossed over and led the New Country wave of Alabama, Travis Tritt, Dwight Yoakam, John Anderson, etc. as it's clear Skynyrd was as big influence on many of them as Jones, Haggard or Buck Owens.
Their loss ranks right up there in the What-if world with Holly, Hendrix, Croce and Joplin.

Early Skynyrd never gets old to me. In my opinion, Pronounced is the best first release in history. Each song is incredible, sans Mississippi Kid. I got tired of Sweet Home Alabama, but everything from Pronounced to One More from the Road is sterling.
I refuse to watch the current Skynyrd brand. When Ronnie died, so did the band as far as I'm concerned.

The ABB were far ahead of Skynyrd in musicianship and sophistication.

Musicianship probably....neither band would fall into the "sophisticated" category.
