Can't even suggest the best funk tune ever. That is impossible. Gotta start somewhere. So, here is a tried and true classic, mastered by everyone.

New Orleans very own The Gaturs, featuring Willie Tee … late 60’s early 70’s funk. A former HS coach of mine played drums for them - Larry Panna. The Gaturs were also featured on Soul Train in 1970

I’m going back to my college days. “Dukey Stick” got George Duke on the charts, but “Reach For It “ was the track we car audio guys used to check our systems!

Back to the business of funk. The Bar Kays. “Holy Ghost”. To me, the perfect funk track. 8 minutes of EVERYTHING you wanted in funk music. Horns. Sweaty, earthy vocals. Drums’n bass. And repetition, repetition, repetition.

The song that originated slapping and popping on the bass. The one and only Larry Graham.

I have been torn on my opinion on this since the very first time I heard it. The Who. “Eminence Front”. There’s DEFINITELY funk in it. The groove is solid. The Ox can stay in the pocket in his sleep! I guess if it was any other band besides The Who, I would definitely call it funk!
