I have always known this, but it is never more apparent than when you listen to Nirvana live albums. His singing sucked compared with Staley, Cornell, and Vedder. Great song writer, not so good singer. And by the way I love the Nirvana unplugged album.

There were more than 4 or 5 grunge bands. He was not the best, nor the worst.

And I hate the way Eddie Vedder sings. Actually, I don't hate him..but I hate what he inspired with the bands who ripped him off.

I like to say that Cobain’s vocals are distinctive.

Never got into Cornell's voice. Always sounded like he was on the verge of a hernia.

He was kind of like Freddie Mercury to me, had an incredible instrument but wasn't really my thing

Mercury was a powerhouse singer. Which means those type of singers can hit high notes really well.

He probably never took singing lessons like many. But any type of band can mask an average voice with superb music. Less of the vocals and more about the music.

Layne and AIC were by far the best of these "grunge" bands and its not even close.

As a matter of fact I tried to listen to Nirvana the other day for the 1st time in years and damn... its awful.

They were practically a punk band. And only 27. Sound is stuck in perpetuity. Raw 27yo punk band vocals.

Stone Temple Pilot's frontman Scott Weiland is criminally underappreciated.

Nirvana was almost more of a punk band than anything (they were def the most punk-ish/indie of the big 4) and Kurt's singing worked for it.. he was not as good a singer as Eddie, Layne or Cornell (I'd say he was better than Cantrell though) so it's whatever.

Definitely. I friggin love Kurt’s voice. I can’t imagine torturing your vocal chords with the type of wailing he did. But fwiw Bleach was probably the album that defined my HS years for me

It’s kind of like his guitar playing. I’ve heard guitar dorks shite on it to no end but it’s was just perfect for their music

As a singer yes, but definitely as a frontman. Weiland is who I picture when I hear Rock Star.

This. His vocal tone/style was perfect for Nirvana. They weren't trying to have the best vocal or guitar tone. It was supposed to be somewhat harsh, at least that's how I'd interpret it.

He wasn't better than Cornell or Staley. So it's really a matter of personal preference between him and Vedder. Pearl Jam used to be my favorite band but Nirvana's music has held up better, imo.
