This is not entirely true. After Tony chopped the ends of his fingertips off, he was forced to tune down and switch to a lighter string gauge to compensate for the pain.

The first two albums are in E standard. Paranoid is slightly sharp but I think this is due to the tape machines and not the tuning of the instruments. Tony may have tuned down a half step for live performances in that era, but it wasn't until Master of Reality that he started tuning down to C# standard.

"When we recorded Master of Reality in February and March 1971, I got quite involved in it and really started coming up with ideas. We did some stuff that we had never done before. On ‘Children Of The Grave’, ‘Lord Of This World’ and ‘Into The Void’ we tuned down three semitones. It was part of an experiment: tuning down together for a bigger, heavier sound. Back then all the other bands had rhythm guitarists or keyboards, but we made do with guitar, bass guitar and drums, so we tried to make them sound as fat as possible. Tuning down just seemed to give more depth to it. I think I was the first one to do that."

He lost his fingertips at age 17 before he ever joined or recorded with Sabbath, he had only been playing guitar three years at the time of the accident.

And his amplification, the room he was in, the mic that was used and positioning of it to record the cab. Then the size of the cab, the speakers in it..

Then amp head, and settings..etc

He makes me happy when I'm feeling down
Take away my worry takes away my frown
Gotta see my Rock'n'Roll doctor
Gotta see him, see him today
He gonna blow me away

This is why I enjoy reading this board. Even longtime, knowledgeable fans like myself can still learn something new.

For those into Sabbath, check out the tribute album Nativity in Black. Dickinson, Jourgenson, Ozzy, Rob Zombie, and others doing Sabbath covers. Fun stuff for Sabbath fans. It is on Spotify. The Supernaut cover is awesome.

There’s not a bad album in the bunch. All 8 with Ozzy and the Dio era also. People have their favorites but they’re all outstanding in their own way. Don’t discount Technical Ecstasy...very underrated.

I’m a 40 year old suburban dude that loves metal but only knew Sabbath from the radio hits.

Same here. I grew up during the 80's MTV age, so it was mostly solo Ozzy stuff and Hair Metal. I didn't dive deeper into the Sabbath catalog until I got into my 40's.

It really is an amazing run of albums, including the Dio albums. I haven't listened to anything after Mob Rules, with the exception of 13.

Iommi is a God. They set the stage for all of my favorite bands of yesterday and today. Legends, best band ever. Their first 4 are the best first 4 of all time.

That concert/documentary ("The End of The End") was the last show on Audience Network (DirectTV) before they signed off, to be replaced with an HBO Max barker channel. Still have it on the dvr.

My first Ozzy show was the Speak of the Devil tour, a live album of strictly Sabbath songs. That album/tour got me into listening to more Sabbath music along with my normal 80's hair metal stuff.

Obviously Iron Man and Paranoid get mega, mega airplay on classic rock to this day.

My favorites are War Pigs and Planet Caravan.

I now get why people refer to them of the birth of metal.

You had dark (intentionally, they were teenagers/early 20s and wanted to piss off their parents and other adults) lyrics, combined with the band name (again, intentional), and Iommi cut the tips of the fingers off his fretting hand in an industrial accident (his last day of work at a day job before becoming a musician full time), so he had to replace those tips with metal caps. To compensate on the guitar, he had to tune everything down.

That is literally the recipe for metal and that's what we got.

The Ian Gillan album is good. One of my favorite Sabbath albums is The Eternal Idol, which is the first Tony Martin record.

Black Sabbath is the devil

Just kidding. Man I loved some Sabbath as a teenager in the mid 70s. Heard a rumor they were having a concert in Pensacola in ‘75 and convinced my buddy to hitchhike there only to find out it wasn’t true. A bummer at first but then we made it over to New Orleans for a Black Oak Arkansas concert in City Park, slept in Jackson Square and now we have a hell of a fun story to tell.
Sabbath music still sounds awesome to me today. Just great pure raw rock. Anything without Ozzie just wasn’t the same to me though.
There is an excellent 2017 documentary about their final concert with a lot of great studio jamming scenes. It is called “The End of the End”. You would enjoy it.

They're the birth of metal, but really more proto-stoner rock than actual metal.
