Love the song, and the lyrics are not too overtly SJW, which I was worried about.

I'm a huge fan of Isbell, and I'm afraid to listen to the song. So disappointed with this album so far. Vampires was good, but not as good as most people have claimed it to be. The lyrics are great, but the song itself is below average compared to his past two albums. Not to say it's bad, but Southeastern and Something More than Free are two of the best albums of all time.

I respectfully disagree sir. It sucks because the melody of that song is pretty awesome, it's got such a good groove. But he has just become an elitist white man living in a white man's world.

Vampires is a good song but the more I listened to it I was like, man this is a shitty fricking way to look at marriage and life.

Just listened to white mans world.......it's a shitty song. Regardless of content it's just not interesting. Add in his elitist bullshite and it's worse.

I'm afraid isbell is dead to me. I'm not sure he can come back from this. At least I have his old records.

"White Man's World"

I listened to it once...not sure how I feel about it honestly...like every other Isbell song...I will need to listen to it 40 times to get its entire message...and then something else will probably hit me from a different perspective....

I am no white apologist...nor am I a racist...where do those of us who don't fit either bill go to now?...why can't it just be normal to not look at anybody with disrespect...until they earn it?

I want to love Jason for this album...but it seems as though he may be overcompensating for his background...his race..something. Why is he guilty if he himself didn't do anything?

the jury is still out...and I'm still giving him the benefit of the doubt because I love his stuff...hell, I have tickets to see him in July...but I hope he doesn't go off the deep end ala DBT with their last effort. I can only stand like 3 songs on that whole record.

I feel like he's in danger of alienating a good chunk of his fans if he continues down this path. I'll withhold judgement until the full album is out, but at this point I'm not holding out much hope.

I agree with you on Vampires. A good song but not the song of the century like the Twitter and other reviews say. I was afraid to listen to White Mans World too. It is disappointing, but not as bad as it could have been (see e.g., new Drive-By Truckers).

This falls into line with his long-running knack for over-analyzing certain issues. It's in the same vein as 'children of children' - just with more polarizing subject matter.

Southeastern is his best work, but the lack of cohesiveness takes away from it being in that category. Super 8 doesn't fit, and it pisses me off that an album with so many great songs has this track that sticks out like a sore thumb. In a lesser way, cause the album overall isn't as good, but Childish Gambinos latest work has a song that ruins its potential greatness for me, that song is 'California', frick that song. Another on it that I like, but find itto be an odd fit is Flying Over Water. Something More Than Free is much more cohesive, but doesn't have the stand out tracks that Southeastern has.

I truly think Vampires is one of his best, would be perfect on Southeastern. He is at his best in songs like that. That song had me in my feels hard.

I only gave a high level listen and read an interview but it seems the message is simply show up for the fight even if you don't think it's yours because we are all in this together.

It's hard to argue against that. Any apologies issued that I caught in the song seemed to be regarding times he came up short in that and not for his race or gender.

That feels like a pretty comfortable landing spot (though I wasn't 100% focused on the song so some lines certainly could have slipped past me)

I listened to all four songs for the first time today. Vampires is very good.
Not his best song, but very good. It's the type of song he does best and the type of writing that drew me to him. The other three songs are bullshite I have no interest in listening to. The political stuff isn't overt like DBT, it's more hinted at. But they just aren't very good songs regardless of politics. Isbell is a better writer than those three songs.

Amanda Shires is very liberal...played Hillary events, etc. I think this album is either to make her happy...or a reflection of her impact on him. Either way, what I've heard so far is not good relative to his other stuff.

I feel like he and Sturgill are starting to tread on thin ice relative to alienation of core fans.

As Conon stated when the Dixie Chicks traded politics for broad spectrum success, "who would have though pissing off the NASCAR crowd would be bad for your careers?"

I don't care what his political beliefs are, but I don't care to hear them throughout an album...and that goes for right-wingers too.

I prefer to use music to escape from that aspect of life.

I agree with you about isbell but I don't think you can say that about sturgill yet. Isbell is gone unfortunately. He's trying too hard to say something in his music instead of letting his music speak.

The entire album is available if you know where to look.

fricking funny that some of you think his wife has been making him liberal...I've been listening to DBT since the Southern Rock Opera era and personally hung out with them in the Blessing and a Curse era through a mutual friend who grew up with them...they've always been liberal as all hell and I can tell you for a fact that they hate you idiot conservative good ol' boys that come out to their shows and get the message all wrong.

I'm sure they do...but the "idiot conservative country boys" happen to comprise a large chunk of their fan base. Dollars talk.

Or you could just not give a damn about his politics and enjoy the tunes
