Lennon. His solo work is underrated IMO.

Easy.
Lennon. Arguably the greatest songwriter who's ever lived.

Probably the two greatest soloist from the 70’s
There is a lot of ground you're staking out. 70s had such diverse acts as Elton John, Peter Frampton, Billy Joel, Linda Rondstadt, Jackson Browne, etc. Bowie was, essentially, a solo act (Spiders from Mars notwithstanding).
Of your choices, James Taylor.

Not even the best songwriter in The Beatles.

Lennon over JT all day, every day. The two aren't even in the same universe as far as songwriting goes. Listen to albums like Plastic Ono, Imagine, Mind Games. That's just his solo work, all much more impressive IMO.
Carol King, for example, is also on a whole other level as a songwriter than JT. Jim Croce is from the same era and even his much smaller body of work is more well thought of.
I like James and think he's alright to listen to. It's cool that you're a bigger fan and all, but as far as songwriting goes, he has to be on the lower end of the spectrum, even among those who were just in his time period.

JT but I would pick the Beatles over JT.

Without a doubt JT.
. . . how many women you ever picked up playing a John Lennon tune?

Honestly a better debate would be Jackson Browne vs James Taylor

Ironically recently watched an interview where JB was asked how their recent tour was being conducted. ... and he quickly laughed and said I'm the opening act that guy fills stadiums.
Although he pretty much was being nice James Taylor & Jackson Browne - Take It Easy
