re: Is Jim Morrison the most overrated rock icon of all time?

I think apocalypse Now is what made him really big. He had a nice run in the 60s, but not the iconic status that the movie made him out to be.m
As I wrote in an earlier post, the Doors were quite big in the U.S. and U.K., especially the U.S. They were quite big before "AN." However, the band faded off the radar after Morrison's death, and "AN" absolutely revived the BAND'S fortunes in the late 70's. But the key figure is Ray Manzarek, who made it his personal 45-year crusade to keep the Doors music before new generations of fans. Building the Morrison mystique was central to this task.
I personally think Morrison's shaman/poet image is quite inflated, embarrassingly so. And unnecessary, too. He and the band can easily be appreciated by the quality of their music, and forget about the drunken hijinks of a young man who was destroyed by his own image.

Ive never been able to separate the Doors music, from Morrison, who i think is a buffoon... and his lyrics...
That said, Manzarek had a hand in those early X records... which are all time greats! So, he's okay in my book...

That's actually a good term for him.

And this. Los Angeles is one of my favorite records.

Jim was a drunk who was cast as a poet in a very good rhythm section. He was a perfect cast at that. It's unfortunate that he succumbed to the bottle and slowly died.
With the way L.A. Woman came out and the music that the Doors wrote after his death, I really do feel that had Jim sobered up they would have been going strong through the 70's as well.
And then again, I don't know if Jim could have pulled off his role being sober.

but he's right there near the top. Known more for his doping than singing.
Which makes for a great rock Icon.

Kurt Cobain was just a dirty heroin addict from wherever dirty heroin addicts come from....Jim Morrison was a rock icon and sex symbol.
If anyone thinks Jim's vocals are overrated, then you need to take another listen to Roadhouse Blues, Riders on the Storm, Summer's Almost Gone, Wintertime Love, and the list goes on and on. Oh, and don't forget The End.
And his stage antics and larger than life lifestyle solidified Jim as a rock n roll icon.

You should stick around then. At some point, everybody gets that label.

Yeah, the poet stuff is overblown. And most of it wasn't a part of The Doors as a band.
If you listen to most of his lyrics, they're just raw rock n roll. Most sound like they could be Rolling Stones lyrics. Soul Kitchen, Alabama Song, Shamans Blues, Runnin Blue, Love Me Two Times, Five to One, We Could Be So Good Together, The Changeling, Been Down So Long, LA Woman, The Wasp, You Make Me Real, Queen of the Highway, Roadhouse Blues.
Those are all just straight up rock n roll. His range as a vocalist is also very underrated.

Here's the last American interview with Morrison. It's pretty cool. Ben- Fong Torres of Rolling Stone lucked into it as he was staying with an industry person that lived in the Same complex as Jim and Pam.
It's just laid back conversation and just normal everyday stuff.

Listen to Morrison hotel again
The guy was legit
The band went off the rails with Touch me and the horn section crap
The doors would not have aged well had they continued and Morrison had pretty much quit the band when he moved to Paris. He wasn't coming back....and didn't

quote:Exactly. Why would the other members of the Doors have put up with him if they didn't think his contribution to the band was essential? The Doors songwriting was mostly a collaborative effort. Morrison's lyrics were often the inspiration for the music. Without him there would have been no Doors.

Not in the least bit. His admiration and legendary status comes hugely from his persona, stage presence, and performances.
Personally I love the doors. I listen to them all the time, but if all you ever heard was their studio recordings and knew nothing else about the band, I could see you thinking he was overrated, although I'd argue the other way since I think their music is phenomenal, and he'd an awesome front man, studio or otherwise

Let's see:
Authored great songs - check
Fronted awesome band - check
Displayed style - check
Looked the part - check
Consumed large quantities of drugs - check
Consumed large quantities of alcohol - check
Rambled incoherently at times - check
Slayer of more women in 5 years than most men see in 5 lifetimes - check
Mysterious death - check
Not sure how you can state the guy is overrated, especially given the time during which he lived, things he did and the band he fronted.
