I like rock shows, or small initmate venues like funk bands (tin roof) or jazz shows. i dont like the massive crowds of people , seeing hot girls, or people in relationships. its not about the music anymore, frick jazz and buku fest.

I don't care for festivals, either, but I don't feel like we have the same reasoning. I love seeing hot girls. Not sure what people in relationships have to do with anything. I don't care for the fact that most of them are just outdoor raves where the best bands only get to play 35 minute sets while shite bands get top bill.

I've never been to a festival. Mainly because I don't want to pay a lot of money and deal with the crowds to see one band. Unfortunately I've missed some of my favorites at Voodoo because of this.

im jealous i dont have a gf. but for real, i like seeing bans in a auditorium, not a damn tailgate like jazz fest is.

nah, for the most part they suck.
it's nice that you get to hear a variety of bands but, they usually have to play abbreviated sets. The sound outside is usually awful. And they're just too crowded to enjoy.

I heard an ad on the Eagle for a music festival here in La. The bands were Modest Mouse, Mumford and Sons and a few other crap bands. The DJ touted how awesome the festival was going to be. Then she proceeded to play Foreigner for the 3rd time today. If these bands are so freakin good, why don't you play their music on your station???? Could it be because they suck?
Hippies, oppressive heat, democrats, millennials, $5.00 bottles of water, and sh!tty bands make me hate festivals as well.

I don't like them. Bad sound is the main reason I don't care for them.

Subpar sound and festie sets don't count toward #stats

festivals are for the young kids IMO

Agreed. I've been to some great festivals but I can't stand the crowds, the douchey moshers that have to be dicks, the obnoxious smokers, the incessant sun/heat/sweating, the exorbitant beer/food prices, the bathroom lines, the abbreviated sets, the shite sound, the lack of intimacy. Unfortunately my favorite genre of music (hard rock/metal), while a great musical community, leads to some unpleasant people to spend 12+ hours with outside.

Lollapalooza in nola with Metallica , Sound Garden and Rage is a great example of this. Bands that I love but, was very disappointed that day

I had a better time at this year's Jazzfest than I thought I would. But if you attend during a hugely popular artist or band it can be a miserable experience.
For me, I never deprive myself of libations. The result can often be a vicious cycle of standing in line for beer, drinking beer while in line for the portacan, finishing in the portacan as you drink the last sip, get back in line for beer, rinse and repeat. All while being in a whole different zip code from the stage. Not the optimum live music situation to say the least.

Not weird at all. I really got into music through Grateful Dead, Phish and other jambands. For those shows, attending the show was like a ritual journey centered on that band. When the show was over, we'd bask in the afterglow of that show and talk about it and party with other people who were at the show. I wanted to experience that band and no other bands.
A festival is just overload for me. I like to go and party, but it always seems like the sets are abbreviated, and it doesn't allow me to appropriately focus on the bands I'm really there to see.
I mean, as far as camping out and having a fun party with friends that involves music, festivals are great. As far as really seeing a band, I'd rather see a show, not a festival.
That being said, I love the Fayetteville Roots Fest because it takes place in my town. Its in venues all over town from small to large, and since it's a "roots" music fest, they tend to pay attention to music. It also has a food component to it that I enjoy. Because it's in my town, I can pick and choose what I want to see and run home to my house or elsewhere when I'm not seeing a show.

Go to SXSW. All shows are in small intimate venues pretty much.
I am not a huge fan of the big outdoor festivals either and only go if it's a really good lineup. I'll probably go to 1 day of ACL this year because Paul McCartney.

I have mixed feelings. I love seeing all that music, but I don't like the short sets, nor do I like dealing with the crowds.
I am doing a music fest this coming weekend - pretty good lineup - deerhunter, alvvays, superchunk, white denim, cloud cult plus like 100 other bands. Only $40 too.

This is not a criticism in any way but I find this pretty odd. Most music lovers I know think that live music is the pinnacle of musical experience. I love being able to see and hear the interaction and communication between band members. I like the improvisation and the spontaneity that happens on a live stage. To me, if a band can't perform live, I don't have much use for them.

Yeah, I can understand the short setlists, but here's a pro-tip. Only go to stuff during the day between 11:00AM and 6PM. It's not super crowded and everything is pretty much free.

For me it depends. The killer for me is a festival with multiple bands playing at the same time on dofferent stages. That really hurts my enjoyment of the music.
If it's just outdoor acoustics, I'm ok with that. Bleed over sound is the thing that really lowers my enjoyment.
