I don’t get why people hate on The Edge from U2.

This scene from It Might Get Loud shows why he’s both a great creator of music and also aware of his own simplicity. Seems like a down to Earth guy. People shite on him for the nickname but everyone was young once and it’s a pretty bad arse name to brand yourself with starting out.

Nah, he sucks. Pretentious douche who doesn't even attempt to play his guitar without loading it up with a hundred different effects. The only musician more douchey, more overrated and more pretentious happens to sing in the Edge's shitty band.

See I can see where you’re coming from with Bono but I think a lot of Bono hate gets thrown on to Edge as well. He would be the first to admit he isn’t some world beater on the strings. His whole style of playing is derived from pedals and creating textures. And he’s made some great music with that style.

It seems to me that some people who have become extremely technically proficient at the guitar sometimes forget that the purpose of playing guitar is not to be extremely technically proficient at the guitar. It is to make pleasing sounds with the instrument that people find appealing. Technical proficiency obviously helps with this, but is not necessarily required. The Edge has created some incredible guitar riffs and loops over the years. Are they comparatively simple? Maybe, but that is meaningless if they sound good. Are his politics questionable? Almost certainly, although he doesn't seem so in-your-face about it as Bono. But the man can write some damn fine songs.

...actually thought it hurt him and Jack White in terms of guitar prowess.

I think he got tthat nickname from when he went by his initial D.H. Evans. D.H. Became the edge.

Politics aside...
If it sounds good, then it sounds good. U2 has sold millions of albums over decades. His guitar playing seems to be good enough; e.g. Sunday Bloody Sunday, I Will Follow, Two Hearts Beat As One, Gloria, etc.

He sucks? You may not like his style but objectively he doesn’t “suck”. Yes it’s loaded up on effects and it’s simple but it fit the songs perfectly.

I was not aware that opinions on U2’s guitarist were strong either way.
U2 the band deserves any derision it gets though

This is why David Gilmour, John Frusciante, and Adam Jones are my all time favorite guitarists.

That documentary showed why Page is an absolute master of his craft, Jack White is a wannabe at best, and The Edge while a genuinely likeable guy is just not at all in the same class as guys like Page. But to his credit he admits it and he has some cool sounds. He’s just saddled with Bono.
The documentary just further cemented my love of Page, actually gave me some respect for Bono, and confirmed all my opinions of Jack White.

lifting blues riffs from other artists? (said half sarcastically). I think they master each of their own style and that was the point of the documentary. White is not a wannabe. White has his own style. The edge mastered the echo and effects. When you hear The edge, you definitely know it's him and nobody else has that distinct sound. I think developing your own uniqueness is what makes a great guitarist. But that's just my opinion.
Also, if being a douchebag disqualifies you from being great, there wouldn't be many left to choose from.

The Edge certainly has a very unique style that is all his own. It's unlike anything else really and defines the U2 sound. I find him to be very interesting.
I don't hate on him. Bono is a douche but is what it is.

I definitely don’t hate “The Edge”, but he’s not in my top 1000 guitar players...on his very best day, he’s just okay...

Everything from Boy to Joshua Tree is good to great. I don’t care how “simple” his guitar playing is perceived. Loaded with effects? Yes, and also immediately recognizable as The Edge.

Loved his early work. U2 kicked arse up until Joshua Tree.

I really like Gloria.

I like his guitar on Joshua Tree, too... It just sounds fricking good.. I dont care for much of U2 beyond Rattle and Hum (parts of it).. which I hated when it came out....
I think Bono is a bit of a muppet, but if the songs are good I dont let that bother me...
