It's not even close. AC/DC in a landslide.

I wouldn't say call it a landslide though, both are top notch IMHO

Enter Sandman, The God that Failed, Unforgiven, Wherever I may Roam, sad but true....that's a solid resume

The Black album is generally seen as the first sign of sellout by Metallica purists. Back In Black is mostly regarded as the pinnacle of AC/DC's catalog and one of the most popular and critically praised hard rock albums of all time (I personally prefer some of the Bon Scott era records, but I know that's not the consensus).

I don't see a legit comparison other than similarity in the cover art. If we're going that route obviously Spinal Tap - Smell The Glove wins. None more black.

I mean its what launched them into mainstream, but I wouldn't call that album selling out...Now Load and Reload

The fact the black album brought Metallica into the mainstream does not take away from the quality of the album. It is a fantastic album from start to finish.

To people who were galvanized as fans by the thrashy early records, the fact that it included ballads was a major breach of etiquette. Add to that, "Enter Sandman" which, as good as it is (IMO), was obviously written and pushed as a crossover song meant for radio play and unit shifting.

If you don't call that album what it obviously is, that's on you. Just saying.

I don't think it was purposefully selling out but Bob Rock was brought in and did make an album that was more palatable for mainstream.

In Justice For All was the beginning of the end.

Metallica had already had a small bit of crossover, mainstream success with the single for One, and the And Justice For All album. The black album just completed that transition, if you want to call it a transition.

There are some good songs on the Black album, but for those us that cut our teeth on the the heavier stuff from Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning, it was too far of a divergence from their sound. Nothing Else Matters is a fantastic song, but a hard one for hardcore Metallica fans from the 80's to take seriously. I wasn't a hardcore fan, so I enjoyed the Black album, but my older brother was hardcore and despises it to this day.

ONE ballad - the exact same as RTL and MoP.

I like Metallica as much as the next guy. But, there was about a year period when I had 2 cassettes (yeah, buddy, I'm old, wanna fight about it?) in my car - AC/DC's Highway to Hell and Back in Black.

Metallica's Black album (and Spinal Tap wants to know where they got the idea for THAT cover) - is solid in the hits, but I think it has a lot of filler - and I say that as a Metallica fan that didn't really start paying attention to them until ...And Justice for All.

I don't think this one is close - Back in Black is one of the definitive hard rock albums in rock history.

AC/DC by a mile for me. However, I think the age factor comes into play heavily, and it hasn't been mentioned.

I don't think it is a reasonable comparison since AC/DC basically writes garbage lyrics for that album and Metallica seems to have more lyrical range. I love them both individually, but they aren't similar apart from the word black.

That's apples and oranges. Theyre both awesome. What is the debate about?
