re: Help settle a debate: Metallica's Black Album vs. AC/DC's "Back in Black"

Their main problem with the movie was thinking general audiences would want to see it. If they made it more of a story backed by their music, like The Wall, and released it straight to video or maybe even a limited theatrical release it wouldn't have been such a financial disaster.
The Orion Festival I think was another good idea, just poorly executed.

Was it a financial disaster? I can't imagine too much was invested in it.

What was this?

I don't know about that - I just know that you can't make that movie and remain "Metallica." Part of my problem with the Napster deal was that Lars got out front and looked/sounded/acted exactly like the whiny bitch that he is - but the mystique remained for the rest of the band, James is a big dude and maintained that tough as nails image through that. But after the movie? Even he was defanged and now there is no mystique remaining from what was once, arguably, the biggest, baddest metal band of their time - almost the Black Sabbath of a new generation. Sad and predictable at the same time. Lars sprawled on his couch surrounded by priceless paintings, looking very much the Danish aristocrat, rather than a rock drummer. Hammett makes Tim Schmitt (Poco, The Eagles) seem manly and assertive.
The only regular guy from the band from back in the day was Jason - and I'll say it, musically the least gifted/least interesting, but at least the guy gave a crap about the band and their legacy.
The movie left me not liking them and not wanting to like them.

Why would you ever care about any consideration other than what came out of the speaker? Seriously. We aren't teenage girls (or at least I assumed we weren't.) The music is the music. Who gives a shite what they do on their own time?

Funny that you would say this, given the "de-fanging" of Ozzy happened just the year before when he was shown weekly prancing around his fancy mansion, taking care of lap dogs and being bossed around by his wife.

Completely agree. That was all Sharon's idea to get the kids famous. Ozzy should never have agreed to it, or only made small appearances. His legacy is significantly tainted by that loss of "The Prince of fricking Darkness" title.

I think we're talking about different movies. I thought you meant Through the Never, the 3D movie. SKOM sucked, I agree that should have never been made.
Orion Music Festival was their attempt at starting a big American festival. First year was in Atlantic City, second year was Detroit. They lost a lot of money on it.

Context is everything. And we're always curious about the "real person" behind the celebrity - at least I am.
You can't say that Cosby isn't going through that right now, on a non-musical note (not that it is quite the same thing, but, again, context is everything).

Tracking - we are talking about different movies - SKOM was like a train wreck - I didn't want to watch, but I couldn't look away.

Yeah, I was talking about SKOM. TTN I see had a $32M budget and took in $22M at the box office. Over its full life (DVD, re-showings, etc.) I think it's likely to at least break even. Hetfield personally has a net worth of almost $200 Million, so I'd guess it's highly likely that he considers the overall project a success.
If you haven't done so, I highly recommend watching the closing credits on a really good sound system. It's the 4 of them playing Orion "live" (it's really more like a jam session) and it is utterly stunning. I handed out like 10 DVDs as gifts to friends based purely on the quality of that.

I don't care about anything other than finished product. e.g. I despise RATM's overtly communist bent, but that doesn't keep me at all from loving some of their songs.

Sure. But I still love The Cosby Show.
I honestly cannot see not liking a Metallica song because you saw them go to a therapist onscreen. Really, not trolling - just saying I don't have any overlap with that mindset. It seems alien/female to me.

Meh. I didn't go back and stop liking Master of Puppets, One, The Four Horsemen, etc. - I just found it hard to think about those guys as "Metallica" going forward.

I like (some of) Rage, too, despite Zach's communism. I appreciate Sean Penn's acting, etc. But, at the end of the day, it's easier to enjoy artistic expression from someone you:
1. Don't know, or
2. If you do know them or know about them, you like them, or
3. If you know them and don't like them, at least respect them.
A LOT of that took a hit with that movie. That's how bad the movie was for them, IMHO.

Meh. Almost the only thing I remember about the movie is we finally got a run-in with Mustaine going, and I loved that.
All I know is Death Magnetic is heavy and great and that happened AFTER the movie.

Wait a sec...
Minimizes one band by calling them a "one trick pony", yet champions another band with Kirk Hammett as their lead guitarist, who's arguably the lord of one-trick ponies. That said, I proudly owned 'Kill Em All' and 'Ride...' on vinyl back in high school, and I enjoyed Metallica when I saw them in concert, so I don't want to come off too much like a hater...
Anyway, 'Back in Black' gets my vote without hesitation.
