Yep.

17-19 in the 80's? Back in Black

17-19 in 1992-3? Black Album

The Metallica sellout thing has always struck me as ridiculous. I know the guy who originally posted it did so just to mention it and not really support the idea. But the "sellout people" believe they've been "shite since Cliff died." Which is ridiculous. He was a great bassist. A bigger Metallica fan would have to tell me if he was Jon Paul Jones though. Meaning how involved was he in arrangement and musicianship? To think that Metallica should have packed it in when he died is assinine. If they were so devastated that they can't go on thats one thing, but being practical, it would be tough to walk away from it after a big taste of success. They weren't Zepplin at that point, like Zepplin was when bonham died. They were only relevant for 3-5 years. And while they weren't mainstream, metal was mainstream. ANY metal fan new who Metallica was. They weren't top 40 radio, but they weren't some obscure secret either. They didn't pursue radio. Radio grabbed them and ran with the Black Album.

My answer to OP is the Black Album. AC/DC vocals have always been polarizing. I never really liked them.

well that's just how the conversation started, obviously.

Could be an interesting thread - although Metallica's "black" album doesn't have a track with the word "black" in it.

Two great ones off the top of my head:

One is an album of songs by grown men acknowledging the transition to adulthood. The other is an album of songs by grown men celebrating immaturity.

There is a time and place for both. Now, I happen to prefer the songs that recognize growing up. When I was 21, I preferred the songs celebrating immaturity.

AC/DC easily.

I like Metallica but that Black album is not what Metallica was. Back in Black is one of the greatest rock albums of all time. Metallica's Master of Puppets is a great album but not one of the best all time.

Metallica went mainstream with the Black album and then Load, Reload. By the time they got back to their roots it was too late. I dont listen to them anymore. Death Magnetic isnt bad but they are history. They sold out.

AC/DC kept the to their roots and kept putting out great tunes throughout their careers.

Black album was a sellout album that did just that. Metallica's first 3 with albums with cliff were the shite though.

Mainstream? Not really. I would argue they pulled the world in the direction of liking their music than that they went "mainstream".

AC/DC are about the most overrated big act of all time. Some good tunes (and a few classics) but largely just mindless bilge with crappy singing, boring drumming (I mean REALLY boring) and stupid lyrics.

If Angus Young weren't Angus Young, they would have basically nothing.

but I think it has a lot of filler

The 2 best songs on the album never saw the popular light of day - The God That Failed and My Friend of Misery. Not even slightly mainstream and not even arguably "filler". And both radically superior to at least 8 of the songs on Back in Black.

Not really. I was in high school when the Black album was released. I was friends with a lot of hardcore Metallica fans, including my big brother who was obsessed with them. They all loved what Newsted brought to the table and loved the And Justice For All album. They all HATED the black album because it was such a departure from the sound that defined them. Now, we can argue whether it was selling out, and a lot of bands go through sound/style changes as they mature, but the album alienated a lot of their hardcore fans, while turning a lot of new fans on to the band. And the alienation wasn't over Cliff being gone, it was the departure from their trademark sound. It's one of the more polarizing albums in my lifetime.

This seems fitting right now...

Kind of. Yes, they kept putting out great songs and albums, but they definitely had to change their style for Brian Johnson.

IMO, they cut out most of their blues background for Johnson. He just can't do it with his singing style. With Johnson, they had to go heavier on the rock.

I really like both albums, but I have to go with Back in Black by a decent margin.

However, Back in Black probably just makes my top 5 AC/DC albums.

I'm not real familiar with metallica and have probably only heard their 10 or so most popular songs that I'm sure everyone has heard.

What made the album in the OP make them "sellouts"? I know that's probably an exagerration but my question is what was different about that album that the so called purists would dislike?

The Black Album is absolute shite and so far below the first four.

Back in Black is a decent album but no where as good as Highway to Hell.

Back in black wins out if these two.

Their previous 4 albums were decidedly metal. The black album was more hard rock.

Just listen to one random song from Master of Puppets, then listen to one random song off the black album and even a casual music fan can tell a difference in the sound.

Its more of a difference in production. The album sounds like a big commercial album, even though the songs are still a lot heavier than anything in the mainstream. Enter Sandman has a bit more pop appeal with the catchy hook but other than that I don't understand the sellout claims.

Must suck. To not be able to grow older? not saying you are that fan, but so many people really hate that they turned 40 and creep toward 50. Hard to be angry and "hard" all the time when you are rich.

all those fans who are pissed either dress like he is in that picture or they are sad. We all know "Metallica-dude" that guy who looks like he did in 1987 and never changed.
