Have you heard the new "Australian" Pink Floyd? They sound bad arse.

That is a great answer and I really don't know if anyone else would come close. They were not only ridiculous a-hole to their fans, but actually worked at sabotaging their success. They could easily have been a much bigger band.
Highly recommend reading "The Replacements: All Over But the Shouting" by Jim Walsh. The Replacements are one of my favorite bands, but I hated them for a while after reading it. I have since gotten over it and just marvel at how improbable their whole run was...

One of my favorite 'Mats story is about Chris Mars, the relatively quiet drummer... He would go on these epic benders and show up just before the gig as his alter ego, Pappy the Clown... complete with creepy clown makeup
The most fricked up story, was Paul making Bob have a drink on stage (or get kicked out the band) just after he had been released from treatment...

Most of theirs comes back to Anthony being an epic douchebag. The rest of the band seems like cool guys, but I just cannot stand that prick. Sorry, Tony, Mike Patton is 10X the singer you'll ever be.

RHCP has had fairly consistent membership, especially since the core of the band is Flea and Keidis (and Slovak, who left the band due to death - that's not really instability of relationships).
The Mats "Portland" is just a great apology song. "Hey, sorry we're such screw ups and played a terrible gig, even by our standards."

I'm just trying to point out he didn't leave the band due to intra-band squabbles. the dude had a heroin overdose and the band continued without him. That's a little different than bands who openly hated one another.
