the Beatles
They spent six years at the very top of their game, which is a long time for a band. No substance abuse problems and all went on to successful solo careers. I guess you could call the John-Yoko thing self-destructive, but as bands go, they didn't implode, they just moved on.

not really the band as a whole, but Shane Mcgowan from The Pogues has always been, and still is, a total wreck. sad because he really is a very talented songwriter. too bad you can't decipher most of his lyrics.

the who: keith moon, 'nuff said. never the same band after he died....hardly a band at all, for that matter.

i'll throw an oddball pick out there: kiss. greed was/is their self-destructive force....whenever they have too much money, they pretty much suck.

Deep Purple has gone through some major changes over the years.

Sex Pistols more destructive

Yeah, Floyd had a good lengthy run. IMO DSOTM was their peak, even though their next few releases were good too. The last REAL Pink Floyd album was The Final Cut, and that was just nothing compared to the previous work.
I can't get into any of the post-waters work. It was just so 80's and cheesy. Too much synth.
Sums it up nicely.

The Final Cut was essentially a Roger Waters solo record.
The same could be said for The Wall.

The Mats really is a terrific answer. We're talking about a band that put out an album in which everyone on it is obviously drunk (Hootenanny).

after thinking about the question a bit, i might have to change my answer to the brian jonestown massacre. awhile back i watched the documentary 'dig!' (which is ESSENTIAL viewing BTW, even if you're not a fan of either BJM or the dandy warhols, which i'm not), and it seemed that every time BJM got within sniffing distance of success, their frontman would find some way to frick it all up. the most glaring example was a private gig at the viper room, whom in attendance were nothing but record execs ready to make an offer....long story short, a brawl breaks out onstage between bandmembers, ending their set & ruining any chance of getting signed....

And made a video for the song that should've been their big break in which the whole video is a stereo just playing the song.
