Playing a guitar has always intrigued me, but I never did put in the time to try to learn to play. I've been looking at some You Tubes and decided that I would like to purchase a beginner guitar and start playing around with it.

I'm not interested or motivated to becoming the next Eric Clapton, just something to make a hobby out of it.

Any suggestions for purchasing a beginner guitar and beginner lessons? It seems everytime I go to a pawn shop there are guitars there, but I wouldn't know a beginner guitar from an expert guitar. Should I buy a new, cheap $75 guitar from Gutar Center to get a feel for it?

Any advice is appreciated.

Don’t. Play piano instead.

A cheap guitar will be hard to play and you will hate playing. I’d look for a good used one that someone bought and didn’t play. I know these aren’t cheap, but a Martin or Taylor will be what to look for in a used guitar and be the last you ever need. Check pawn shops, FB marketplace for good deals and compare the models to new prices.

If the budget is really thin look for an Epiphone, Yamaha or research beginner guitars. There are thousands of great guitars collecting dust in closets.

Just spend $200 on a simple acoustic from Guitar Center. There are loads to choose from. If you get into it, you can upgrade down the road

Find a good rig on FB marketplace or CL - probably something in the $100-300 range. Chances are, you'll get something that's barely been used at 1/3-1/4 of retail price.

frick lessons. Learn basic chords and scales. Play the shite out of them until your hands hurt and you're bored out of your mind. Keep doing that for another month, then build on to weirder shite. If you want to play something in particular, there's probably a YT tutorial and some tablature from 1997.

Ask on the music board, there are a lot of guitarists there.

I am a hack so take this for what it is a hacks opinion but I would suggest a Yamaha Pacifica if you want to go electric. If you want to spend less a Squier Bullet Mustang.

Go on Amazon and purchase a Jasmine S35. I’ve had one for a decade. It’s always in tune every time I grab it, it plays easy and sounds pretty good to boot.

I’ve probably had a dozen or so folks play it and they can’t believe it’s a 100 dollar guitar. Buy one, you won’t regret it.

Start on an acoustic. That’s my only advise because it’s been years since I played.

Learn basic chord shapes and move them up and down the neck. after you nail that learn to solo on pentatonic scale. You will sound like you are top 10% of guitar players.

You want electric or acoustic?

Lots of good teachers on youtube...i would not pay for lessons. Marty Schwartz is good and well liked

Like the guy above said, the cheap ones are cheap for a reason. They are going to be harder to play and they will make you think you cant do it, when you can. I know because it happened to me. My mom had an old Takamine that belonged to my grandpa that I used to try and play but it was kind of beat up and never really kept up. I always wanted to learn, but I would get frustrated when playing it because the action was really high and it just wouldnt hold a tune.

Finally when I turned 30 I bought myself an Alvarez Artist Elite for $450.

Not top of the line but a good quality guitar. It was SO much easier to play than the older Takamine. Learning on the Alvarez actually got me to the point where I could play the Takamine and I've since had it restored and it plays beautifully. Its harder to play, and I can understand NOW, why I never kept going with it.

My advice, if its something you really want to do, spend the extra money and get something a little nicer with a lower action.

Learn a few basic chords and get comfortable transitioning between them.

Like the guy above said, Marty is a good follow on YouTube. He plays everything. He can get a little complex for a beginner at times.

Matt McCoy is another good one for beginners. He "dumbs" a lot of songs down to a few chords that might not sound EXACTLY like the recordings, but will help you build your confidence.

This, but only after you test it out with Stairway to Heaven on a Marshall stack.

Exactly what I did, and it was a good choice. Also, I'd suggest getting electric before you get an acoustic, just because electric is easier to play.

But, I'm not great at guitar, just been screwing around playing on it a few hours a week for a few years.

I recommend starting with a four neck guitar.

No. Learning to play guitar is miserable and painful. A $75 guitar will make it even more so.

Depending on your hand size, I would recommend a Taylor 110. That is my travel guitar.

DO NOT venture over to the music board. You would get better advice on the Rant or soccer board about a guitar than there.

Order one of these Epiphone Hummingbirds along with a snark tuner
LINK
My friend is just learning, he ordered one of these and it was ready to play right out of the box. It's beautiful too.
You can find some great deals at pawnshops, guitar shops, whatever, but you have to know guitars pretty well, or you can end up with junk.
Also the Hummingbirds have a slightly shorter scale length than a normal dreadnought guitar, it helps lessen the string tension and is a little easier to play.
