The music board would be cool if not for the people that hang out on it.

Any suggestions for purchasing a beginner guitar and beginner lessons?

First decide if you want an acoustic guitar or electric guitar. Electric is easier to play because the strings are thinner.

But you would need an amp as well. My son has the Fender mustang micro ($100) that you plug in to your electric guitar and headphones and it is awesome!

Budget Electrics brands (in alphabetical order only)
Epiphone (gibson)
Fender Squire
Gretsch
PRS - SE

Acoustics - this is where you would need to spend more money to have something playable. Cheap acoustics are pure shite to play on. The best playing cheap acoustic I have ever played was the Fender Tomcat. I think its about $350.

Guitars are like any other item. Buy a nicer one and you can sell it easier if you don't like it. Not many people are going to want to buy a used cheap guitar, which is why they are all at the pawn shops.

Cheap guitars can be miserable. Bought my 8 y/o son a Squier Mini Strat to learn on. That thing is the biggest piece of shite. Takes forever to get in tune, then loses it in 2 minutes. The frets are so bad that without perfect finger pressure, you are bending the notes out of tune anyway on the rare occasion that you do have everything set up right.

Yep. It’s harder for a beginner on a shitty guitar. Get a decent used strat or tele where with a proper setup you can lower the action for easier play, adjust the intonation, and have good tuning pegs so it stays in tune, even lock in tuners upgrade isn’t a bad idea until your muscle memory gets better.

Why care about anyone else..

talk about the shite you want to talk about, and talk shite on what you don't want to talk about.

That's what a message board is mostly for.

Eta

This should have stayed on the OT since it's directed at the OT. That's how some fun threads accidentally get started.

You don't need an uber expensive guitar to start, but getting the absolute bottom of the barrel guitar will also likely hinder your progress. I do not agree with those that said no lessons are required. If I could go back and get a teacher show me some of the things that took me years to discover on my own, I absolutely would. Once you get your bearings and are able to actually play a bit, it may no longer be required, but a good guitar teacher can help you in ways that online lessons cannot (tips, proper technique, etc).

Three things are going to be your hurdles-

#1- The pain of playing guitar without callouses and muscle memory, can you build up the callouses, can you build up the muscle memory in fingers, hands, wrists before getting tendonitis and hand cramps and bloody fingers, and giving up?

#2- Natural musical inclination, are you already musically inclined? Piano, saxophone, drums? You may find out after a while you don't have "it". Being an audiophile and listening to music all day every day and going to 1000 concerts doesn't count.

#3- Time and motivation- most people learn as teens or younger when you don't have shite else to do, and as young males, believe that playing guitar will impress girls (it does) and that's motivation to power through and put in the time to get good. As an adult, you don't have the same kind of spare time. Sure the advent of things like youtube can accelerate your learning curve from back in the day, but only so far. It's still going to take years to get good at it, assuming you make it past #1 and #2 above. Will you have the motivation to keep at it?

Of those 3 things, none have anything to do with the quality of guitar you start out with.

Another point- decide if you want to play acoustic type music or electric type music. You can do both, simultaneously, but you obviously need two different guitars.

I also recommend starting out with .9 string size. Once you hit the big time and decide to get serious about your tone, you can start dabbling in string diameter and a million other things that can shape your sound.

I even further recommend in-person lessons because a youtube video teacher isn't going to stop you and correct your hand position or some other bad habit. At least for the first 6 months if not a year, you should pay for in-person lessons.

shite got sideways, but after you deleted the pictures of the ibanez, flying J, amps and pedals; what was your recommendation for a beginner guitarist? Surely a mid priced quality acoustic.

I used to recommend starting with an acoustic. They are just more versatile, or at least were, until headphone amps came along. Acoustic's can encourage a bad habit that can be difficult to overcome: a tight grip

Starting on an electric can encourage bad habits. The main one not being able to actually play guitar.

Acoustic guitars and electric guitars are slightly different animals. But I have never met anyone that could play an acoustic guitar well that could not make an electric guitar sound good, even if that wasn’t their forte. Vice versa…. Not so much.

People that can bang out sex pistols, green day, and nirvana power chords on an electric with two finger power chords…

The opposite does not apply.

Start on an acoustic.

I'd get an applause, that's what I started on.

People talk about starting with acoustic or electric, I say why not both? If you are serious about it, it can be easily attained nowadays with Reverb and ebay.

Best of both worlds, hear the notes better with an acoustic or have more versatility with electric

So your recommendation for a wanna be beginning guitarist is now to go buy two guitars? An acoustic and an electric?

If he/she is just wanting to figure it out; they probably aren’t too fricking serious yet. And buying two guitars isn’t probably going to happen.

I mean, they started a thread about it. “I want to play guitar”. The answer is a mid priced quality acoustic. If their fingera hurt too bad and they say frick it they can still get most of their money back out of a decent acoustic guitar.

Your initial response was to post a picture of a bunch of electric guitars, amps, and pedals. Which was you just peacocking. But no real advice.

Now your advice is to buy an acoustic and an electric.

And along the way you called me a pussy.

And I bet you don’t play guitar nearly as well or know nearly as much as you think you do.

Good luck OP since this got moved here.

The reason I said to avoid this place is above.

Downvote away while you discuss some fricking song, album, or whatever.

I got one of these a few weeks ago, and it's pretty damn good.

Still tweaking the mix between the Piezo and the bridge pickup in the second switch position. It will be fine when I get it just right.
The neck pickup is fantastic. Also, you can hear it well enough unplugged to play alone.

Any advice is appreciated.

I'm with you, learning to play late in life as a bucket list mission. I'd start on electric since it's easier to play. Get a cheap amp and don't worry about how clean or full it sounds. You can upgrade once you get better.

As for guitar recommendations... I'm a Fender guy so I'd recommend buying a Squier Classic Vibe. I've bought two (strat and Jazzmaster) and both were playable right our of the box. This website sells new overstock as "used" at $150-200 less than new.

As others have mentioned, start with chords and use YouTube tutorials. Commit to playing for a few minutes every day and eventually it will become second nature and you'll see progress over time. Hope it works for you brother!

When I started I bought a cheap acoustic, I think it was a fender, that I paid about $150 for including a soft shell case and a chord book. This was 30 years ago so its probably a $250-300 guitar now. If I had it to do again, I would get a nylon string guitar. They are much easier to play, easier than an electric IMO and easier on your fingers. I recently bought a cheap ($170) yamaha nylon string and its all I want to play now. Here is the LINK

eventually yeah, acoustic first though. Like what i said with the applause.

Unlike a new or very nice Taylor 110, like you recommended, which go for what $700-$900?..the applause wouldn't bother OP's bank. OP could actually get a new fender squier and applause acoustic for probably less than $800.

So eat shite.

Maybe they want to pursue..ever had any ambition in life besides your college football team? You get both sides of the coin with acousic and electric.

that's what you're supposed to do on The OT. Youd know that if you understood the history of TD..frickin 2021.

Here is the fixed LINK.....it may be porn....
